One way of understanding a person is to look at the way they spend their unpaid time, as it is usually more open to choice than the way they earn their living. In my case both are somewhat definitive, but I will start here with the things I have done simply because I thought they were worth doing.

Unlike some of the organizations mentioned below, BATANS was not in need
of any "fresh blood" in the ranks of the leaders and event organizers when
I joined in 1997(?).
That, and the fact that I am not as young as I once
was, has made it very enjoyable for me as just another member,
participating when possible and just trying to keep in touch by e-mail in
between.
That having been said, several of the members have expressed appreciation
of the technical advice that I have offered from time to time - based on
my experiences as a mechanic specializing in British automobiles beginning
in the mid '50s, and also, through most of the 1960s, a Service Dealer
for Jaguar cars.
Approximately one year on the Userhelp support team,
Member of several beta test groups in the late 1990's.
Commissioner, then Chairman of Property and Restoration Committee, then
Commission Chairman;
Major involvement, first as P & R Cmte. Chair, then Commission Chair, in $3/4
million restoration of Lock 5 at Wellington to operational ready condition.
Included review of RFP, tender bids, and contract review as well as
significant technical input.
Initiated and participated in major review of Commission operating by-laws and
procedures.
Member, then Advisory Board Member, then Chairman. Membership has spanned
almost two decades and four incarnations, the latest being the Nova Scotia
Allergy & Environmental Health Association (NSAEHA).
Headed a drive, about ten years ago, to continue the existence of the
organization when the then current Chairperson was planning to close it
down because of the heavy work load. Left the Advisory Board when the
National Mandate and By-laws were set aside by a majority Board vote in
favor of local agendas.
Beginning
in 1974 when the program first came to Nova Scotia, worked as; Instructor,
Senior Instructor, Chief Instructor (Training Center manager) - total of
10 years - retired 1984 for medical reasons.
Encouraged the development of a major fund raiser (which still continues)
and initiated a review of other programs and the By-laws during term of
office.
Chairman for one term, Basic Photography Course instructor, two terms.
Joined with original organizers as an organizing committee worker,
President (about) 1980-81
At various times, served in every Executive Committee office,
Over several years, chaired and/or was a member of almost every Committee,
serving on as many as seven committees at the same time, including By-laws
committee, Union Contract Proposal Committee, joint (labour/management) Job
Evaluation Appeal Committee, joint Staff Benefits Committee, joint Pension
Advisory Committee.
Head negotiator for one Union Contract.
Charter member and organizational worker, became C.A.S.C. Region Chief
Marshal. Retired in 1973 when our family expanded for the second time.
First organizational promoter and
worker, Charter Member, first Secretary, first contact with National
organization (C.A.S.C.), held every Executive position (except Director)
at least once and some several terms, participant and organizer in all
types of competition organized by the Club in the first two decades
(included Navigational Rally, Gymkhana (forerunner of autoslalom), Hill
Climb, Ice slalom, Race (school and one race only). Headed first review
committee for Club By-laws. Rally director 1995 to 1999, Webmaster late
1996 to Aug. 1999. Dropped out of active involvement September 1999.
First Scoutmaster, St. Matthews Troop, Halifax,
First Scoutmaster, 1st N.H.C.I.A. Troop, Fall River / Wellington /
Grand Lake.
