Huskies 34 Mounties 7

Halifax - Running back Dean Jones carried the sixth-ranked Saint Mary's Huskies past the Mount Allison Mounties 34-7, rushing for 232 yards on 22 carries, while scoring 3 TDs. Rookie running back Michael MacPherson put on a display in the fourth quarter, racking up 94 yards on 11 carries, most of it in one drive. He also had a 13 yard pass receptiion. QB Ryan Jones continued his highpercentage passing completing 7 of 14 for 159 yards. The 7-1 Huskies finish the season on a seven-game winning streak, their only loss being a 3-pointer in the season opener, a game they had appeared to have won. They will host Acadia next Saturday for the AUAA Championship. Saint Mary's offence gained 545 total yards and seems on a roll as they head into the Jewett Trophy game. The Mounties (3-5) could muster little offensively managing just 242 yards in total offence. QB Dan Capone was held to only 9 completeions on 27 attempts for 101 yards. Axemen 33 X-Men 20

Antigonish NS - Quarterback Blaine Scatcherd led his Acadia Axemen to a 33-20 victory over the St. Francis Xavier X-Men in Antigonish. Scatcherd connected on 28 of his 36 passes for 334 yards, including 3 TDs and gave up 1 interception. This brought his season passing yardage to 2,223, which puts him number-one in the nation, 25 yards ahead of Alberta's Blair Zahara. A major part of that Axemen air attack was Marco Picotte who grabbed 2 TDs as part of his 102 yards receiving, as Acadia (5-3) ran up 493 yards in total offence. Wide receiver Jermayne Baldwin was the offensive standout for StFX (1-7) with 5 receptions for 92 yards and snagged both of the X-Men's TDs. Sackville NB - Defensive lineman Marc-Andre Lahaie led the Mount Allison Mounties to a 34-21 victory over the visiting St. Francis Xavier X-Men. Lahaie recovered two StFX fumbles while recording four solo tackles, three assists and two quarterback sacks. The X-Men (1-6) did the bulk of their scoring late in game, getting two fourth-quarter TDs that closed the final gap to 13. The offensive spark for the X-Men was quarterback Derek Martin who connected on 15 passes for 282 yards, with 2 TDs for 114 yards and a TDand 2 INTs. For Mount Allison (3-4) the offence was led by running back Sundee Jones wiht 114 yards and a TD, and quarterback Dan Capone who threw for 137 yards and a TD. Mount Allison will end the regular season next week at Saint Mary's, while StFX host Acadia. Wolfville NS - The #6 Saint Mary's Huskies started strong for a change and took a 26-7 halftime lead on to a win over second-place Acadia Axemen 45-35. The win clinches first place in the AUAA for the Huskies who will host Acadia in the AUAA Championship game for the Jewett trophy in two weeks. There were nine passing TD's in the game. Acadia's Blaine Scatcherd threw 5 in his 34 for 51 outing and 375 yards. SMU's Ryan Jones completed 11 of 18 to improve his CIAU leading passing percentage, with 229 yards and 4 passing TD's. SMU's workhorse running back Luis Perez gained 82 yards on 20 carries, and had two first-half touchdowns. Rouge et Or 24 Gaiters 16

Lennoxville QC - Quarterback Mathieu Bertrand led #5 Rouge et Or to 24-16 victory in Lennoxville. Bishop's Gaiters needed the win and a McGill loss to keep their playoff hopes alive. The Gaiters (2-6) grabbed a 10-0 first-quarter lead, but Laval (6-2) stormed back with 24 straight points for the win. Bertrand passed for 291 yards with 2 TDs and an interception, while scrambling for another 53 yards on 11 carries. Running back Mathieu Brassard carried the ball 20 times for 104 yards and a touchdown. Laval finishes third in the OQIFC, and will travel to Montreal next weekend for a semi-final match-up with No. 3 Concordia.
Redmen 30 Golden Gaels 28

Kingston ON - Anand Pillai's 12-yard field goal with just over three minutes remaining, lifted the McGill Redmen to a 30-28 win at Queen's. With the win the Redmen (3-5) earn the final playoff spot in the OQIFC and will host their semi-final meeting with the Ottawa Gee-Gees. (Ottawa must play their playoff games on the road because of sanctions by the CIAU for dressing ineligible players in the 1997 season.) The loss was a heartbreaker for Queen's, who with the win and Bishop's loss to Laval, would have grabbed fourth-place in the O-Q. For the Redmen, Pillai not only kicked the winner, but accounted for most of the McGill offence, connecting on five field goals on the day. Returnign from an injury, McGill quarterback Josh Sommerfeldt completed 15 of his 23 passes for 209 yards, one for a touchdown, and had one interception.
Gee Gees 43 Stingers 29

Ottawa - Quarterback Phil Cote scored three touchdowns as the Ottawa Gee Gees claimed first-place in the OQIFC, with a 43-29 victory over the third-ranked Concordia Stingers. Cote passed for 192 yards and a touchdown, while also carrying the ball 20 times for 115 yards and three TDs. The undefeated Gee-Gees (8-0) however will have to travel to McGill for their semi-final match-up next weekend. Because of sanctions imposed in 1997, Ottawa must play all of their OQIFC playoff games on the road. Concordia (6-2) actually jumped out to 16-7 lead but Ottawa fought back, outscoring the Stingers 21-6 in the second-half to seal the victory. Concordia finishes second in the conference and will host Laval in the other OQIFC semi-final next Saturday. OUA

Waterloo, ON - Laurier running back Justin Praamsma ran all over the ninth-ranked Waterloo Warriors Saturday afternoon. In the 36-15 win, Praamsma carried the ball 29 times for 209 yards and 2 TDs. Also chipping in for the Golden Hawks was quarterback Adam Lane. On just 7 of 11 passing, Lane aired it out for 136 yards and 2 TDs. Mike Bradley rushing for 113 yards on 20 carries for Waterloo (5-3). The victory for eighth-ranked Laurier (6-2) gives them second-place in the OUA, and they'll host No.6 McMaster in one semi-final next weekend. In the other OUA playoff match-up, the ninth-ranked Warriors will travel to London to take on No.2 Western.
Mustangs 37 Varsity Blues 2

London - The No.2- Western Mustangs defeated U of T 37-2, as they played their last-ever regular season game at J.W. Little Stadium. Running back Scott Crawley led the way with 19 carries for 159 yards and a touchdown, as his backfield mate Fabian Rayne took the day off. Rayne is still nursing a sore ankle and was kept out of action this week. Certainly he'll be ready for next Saturday's OUA semi-final. Western finished 7-1 and first in the OUA. They've locked-up home field advantage throughout the OUA playoffs and will host No.9 Waterloo next weekend. The Varsity Blues (1-7) only managed 152 yards in total offence against the Mustangs and wound up another disappointing campaign. The bright spot for Toronto was defensive back Sean Spence who intercepted two Western passes, his fifth and sixth of the season.
Gryphons 49 Lancers 26
Sat Oct 30:
Guelph - Running back John Bonhert ran for four touchdowns as the Guelph Gryphons beat the visiting Windsor Lancers 49-26. Along with his 4 TDs, Bohnert had 115 yards rushing on 19 carries for Guelph. Quarterback Tyson Beach connected on 13 of 19 for 221 yards and 2 TDs. The Gryphons (3-5) finish all alone in fifth place in the OUA. The 0-8 Lancers dhad a better outing offensively, but couldn't keep the ball out of their own end zone. Windsor coughed up 550 yards in total offence and the Lancers didn't get into the scoring until they were already down 21-0 in the opening quarter. Lancer quarterback Morgan Gallagher threw for 141 yards and a TD, but also gave up three interceptions.
Marauders 21 Yeomen 20

Toronto - The sixth-ranked McMaster Marauders scored 10 points in the final two minutes, as they came from behind to beat the York Yeomen 21-20. All season, York have been in every game, but just couldn't get the big defensive play or key score when they needed it. Against the Marauders, Jeff Johnson rushed for 145 yards, while Brian Nugent added four receptions for 129 yards and a TD in the loss. McMaster got most of its offence through the air, as quarterback Ben Chapdelaine completed 21 of 37 for 289 yards, with a TD and an interception. Derek Livingstone kicked the game-winning field with just five seconds remaining and went 3 for 5 on the afternoon. McMaster finishes in a second-place tie with Laurier in the OUA, but lose the tiebreaker due to their week-three loss to the Golden Hawks, be on the road for their semi-final meeting with Laurier on Saturday. Golden Bears 35 Bisons 18

Winnipeg - Alberta Golden Bears did their part with a 35-18 win over the tenth-ranked Manitoba Bisons, but lost their playoff hopes. Bears got 362 yards passing and 2 TDs from quarterback Blair Zahara. Alberta (3-5) actually jumped out to a 17-0 lead against the lackluster Bisons (5-3). However, it was all for naught as the Bears needed a Calgary loss at Saskatchewan to sneak into the playoffs. The Bisons are now fired up, as they head to their first playoff action in 8 seasons. Manitoba finishes third in the conference and will travel to Saskatoon on Saturday to battle the No.1-ranked Huskies.
Dino 23 Huskies 18

Saskatoon - The Calgary Dinos needed a win and got it, 23-18 over the nation's #1 Saskatchewan Huskies. Dinos' Scott Wenz had 15 carries for 130 yards, Alan Giacalone rambled for 85 yards and a TD on 18 carries, while quarterback Lincoln Blumell completed 19 of 27 for 230 yards and a TD. Calgary wil face No. 4 UBC next Saturday in Vancouver. The Huskies still finish second in the West, and host tenth-ranked Manitoba Bisons in the other Canada West semi-final next week.
Thunderbirds 35 Rams 7

Vancouver - The fourth-ranked UBC Thunderbirds clinched first-place in Canada West with a 35-7 win over the visiting Regina Rams. Again it was the Akbal Singh show for the T-Birds. Singh bobbed and weaved his way for 243 yards rushing and 2 TDs on 25 carries. Singh also set a Canada West single-season rushing record, finishing the ’99 campaign with 1,415 yards on the ground. He broke his own record of 1,377 yards set a year ago, and now sits in the third and fourth spots in the CIAU record book. Thunderbirds safety Dan Rootes ran back an interception 18 yards for a TD nd had two solo-tackles and three helpers, as the UBC defence held Regina to just 224 yards in total offence. Rams end their first CIAU season at 0-8. The first-place Thunderbirds will now have home-field advantage throughout the Canada West playoffs, hosting either Calgary or Alberta next weekend in one Hardy Trophy semi-final.
Rouge et Or 48 Redmen 15

Quebec City - Quarterback Mathieu Bertrand led fifth-ranked Laval to a 48-15 victory over the visiting McGill Redmen. He completed 17 of 30 for 316 yards and a TD, while rambling for another TD as part of his 60 yards rushing on six carries. Bertrand's favourite targetswere Pascal Robitaille and Sebastian Robillard who each had five receptions, combining for 211 yards of offence in the air. Five different Laval players broke the plane for majors. The Laval defence had McGill bottled up all afternoon, holding the Redmen (2-5) to just 217 yards of total offence. The lone bright spot for the Redmen was cornerback Andrew Scuccaro with an interception, four solo tackles and three helpers. Rouge et Or now sit securely in third place in the OQIFC, while McGill Redmen are in a three-way tie for the OQIFC's final playoff spot with Bishop's and next week's opponent Queen's Golden Gaels.
Huskies 41 X-Men 7

Antigonish NS - Last week Saint Mary's Huskies broke up a close game at the half with 24 unanswered points in the third quarter in a 53-20 win over StFX. This week #7 Huskies went into Antigonish and did it again with a 19-point 3rd to break out of a 15-7 halftimelead on the way to a 41-7 win over StFX X-Men. This was another mud bowl, but Saint Mary's took better advantage of theconditions than in their close win over Mt Allison a coupleof weeks ago. Dean Jones and Luis Perez did most of the damage for the Huskies (5-1). Jones carried for 117 yards and a touchdown, while Perez added 108 yards on the ground and another TD. SMU Quarterback Ryan Jones completed 7 of 17 for 149 yards, 2 TDs and an interception. Derek Martin led the X-Men offence with 145 yards passing and found wide receiver Jermayne Baldwin for their only score. However, Martin also threw two interceptions. Mounties 16 Axemen 3

Sackville NB - Mount Allison kicker David Bradford made good on three of his four field goal attempts, including a 44-yard strike, leading the Mounties to a 16-3 upset of the nation's No.9-ranked Acadia Axemen. This was the second game of a home-and-home series between the two clubs, and was another defensive battle in Sackville. All of Mount Allison's (2-4) offence came in the form of running back Sundee Jones. Jones rambled for 126 yards on 26 carries and took charge of the Mounties ground game. Quarterback Dan Capone was held to just 44 yards passing, but did rush for 47 yards and the Mounties' only touchdown on the day. For Acadia (4-2) quarterback Blaine Scatcherd completed 16 of 33 for 187 yards, but failed to find the end zone for the Axemen. The defensive star was Mounties' Brett Fitzpatrick, who had five tackles, assisted on two others and recovered a fumble in Mount Allison's second win of the season.ACA 0 0 3 0 3 MTA 3 0 10 3 16
Gaiters 18 Concordia Stingers 8

Lennoxville QC - Four interceptions by the Bishop's secondary led the Gaiter's to 18-8 upset of the country's No.1-ranked Concordia Stingers. The spark for the Gaiters (2-5) came from Geoff Smith who grabbed two interceptions, to go along with his four solo-tackles and three helpers. On offence, the Bishop's attack was led by the potent combination of O.J. Burnett and Ben Ouimet. Burnett rushed for 74 yards on 21 carries, while Ouimet totaled 104 yards on just five attempts. The biggest carry of the day came late in the third quarter as Ouimet frenzied the crowd with a 75-yard TD run, which proved to be the game winner. The Stingers (6-1) did manage to move the ball on offence, but finding the end zone was a different story. Jean-Michel Paquette led all rushers with 122 yards on 17 carries for Concordia. The win puts the Gaiters right in thick of the OQIFC playoff race, while the loss will almost certainly drop Concordia from their short stay at No.1.
Gee Gees 34 Golden Hawks 27

Ottawa - The Ottawa Gee Gees reeled off 21 fourth quarter points, on their way to 34-27 victory at home to the sixth-ranked Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks. Quarterback Phil Cote did it in the air and on the ground for the Gee Gees (7-0). Cote passed for 277 yards with 1 TD and 1INT, while adding 70 yards rushing and 3 TDs. Only two Ottawa receivers got into the action, but get into the action they did. Rob Harrod snagged five passes for 124 yards and Ibrahim Tounkara had four receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown. The Golden Hawks (5-2) got all of their offence from running back Justin Praamsma. Praamsma carried 14 times for 161 yards and two touchdowns in the losing cause. The Ottawa defence held the CIAU's third-leading receiver Andre Talbot to just one reception, an 11-yard touchdown grab in the second quarter. The Ottawa Gee Gees are now the only undefeated team in the country at 7-0.
Golden Gaels 55 Varsity Blues 3

Toronto - An attack that amassed 523 yards of total offence, catapulted the Queen's Golden Gaels to a 55-3 win over the hometown Varsity Blues. Running back Paul Correale took charge of this one early for Queen's (2-5). Correale scored three first quarter touchdowns, rushing for 165 yards and staking the Golden Gaels to an insurmountable 39-0 halftime lead. Quarterback Beau Howes chipped in with two touchdown passes to wide receiver James MacLean. Howes ended the afternoon with 218 yards passing, while MacLean had seven receptions and added 149 yards to his CIAU lead. Running back James Baskin did have a good day for the 1-6 Varsity Blues. Baskin took the ball 12 times for 71 yards, while adding another 48 yards on 4 kickoff returns. Queen's now find themselves in a three-way tie with Bishop's and McGill for the final playoff spot in the OQIFC, with McGill playing at Laval tomorrow in the CIAU's only Sunday action.
Marauders 34 Mustangs 27

Hamilton - The eighth-ranked McMaster Marauders defeated the second-ranked Western Mustangs 34-27, for the first time since 1984. Special teams played a huge role in the games opening half. The Marauders (5-2) jumped out to 10-0 lead in the first quarter, only to have an early second quarter field goal blocked. However, the blocked kick hopped right into the arms of quarterback Ben Chapdelaine who in ran it in for a 17-0 lead. McMaster also blocked a punt late in the first half that was run in for another TD, this time by defensive back Bob Clark. And, with a 31-10 halftime lead the Marauders simply held on for the win. The Mustangs (6-1) did rally behind the arm of Mike O'Brien. O'Brien finished with 239 yards passing and one touchdown, but also added 3 INTs. Running back Chris Dorrington had a huge day for McMaster. Dorrington ran for 106 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. In the air, Mike Linton did most of the damage for McMaster. Linton caught six passes for 126 yards, including a 75-yard TD on the Marauders opening play. The win now puts McMaster in a second place tie in the OUA with Laurier at 5-2. On game back of the conference leading Mustangs.
Yeomen 27 Lancers 14

Windsor - The Yeomen's Jeff Johnson carried the ball the ball 36 times for 202 yards and a touchdown, as York captured their second win of the season, 27-14 at Windsor. The Lancers (0-7) had a 13-9 halftime lead, but just could not hold off the Yeomen (2-5). For Windsor, it was running back Gary Carter who carried the play. Carter took the ball 18 times for 81 yards in the Lancers 7 straight loss, with their last opportunity for a win in '99 next week at Guelph. On the defensive side of the ball, Yeomen linebacker Tyler Ross led the way. Ross had six solo-tackles, an assist and a quarterback sack. Next week, York rounds out the season at home to the 5-2 McMaster Marauders.

5 Waterloo ON- Running back Mike Bradley galloped for 160 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries, to lead the tenth-ranked Waterloo Warriors to a 17-15 victory over the Guelph Gryphons. The Warriors defence also came up big in this one, holding Guelph to just 172 yards of total offence. Leading the way for the Waterloo (4-3) defence was Ted Siountres. Calgary - The Manitoba Bisons tallied 17 fourth quarter points to complete the comeback, and sneak past the Calgary Dinos 27-22. The winning score came in the game's final minute as quarterback Shane Munson capped off the rally with a 9-yard TD strike to Cory Larsen. Munson passed for 165 yards, but made his biggest impact on the ground. Finishing with 123 yards rushing, Munson scampered for a 95-yard TD early in the fourth quarter to ignite the comeback. Craig Carr also rambled for a TD as part of his 138 yards rushing for the 5-2 Bisons. Lincoln Blumell was the offensive standout for Calgary. Blumell passed for 253 yards and a touchdown for the 2-5 Dinos. The Bisons locked-up third place in Canada West with the win, while Calgary still lingers in the final playoff spot with Alberta.

Regina - Led by running back Doug Rozon, the Saskatchewan Huskies rebounded from last week's loss to UBC to top the Regina Rams 24-7. Rozon, the CIAU's leading rusher, carried the ball 28 times for 177 yards and a touchdown. The Saskatchewan (6-1) attack also looked to quarterback Ryan Reid, who kept the Rams' defence honest. Reid connected on 11 of 17 for 152 yards. Neal Hughes carried the bulk of the offensive load for Regina. Hughes rushed for 68 yards and q touchdown for the winless Rams (0-7). Saskatchewan held Regina to 213 yards of total offence and kept them off the scoreboard in the games second half. Mike Letendre's 11 tackles anchored the Huskies' defensive effort. Jeff Zimmer's 11 tackles and a fumble recovery led the Regina.
Thunderbirds 19 Golden Bears 14

Edmonton - After falling behind 14-1 late in the second quarter, UBC replied with 18 unanswered points to squeeze by the Alberta Golden Bears 19-14 in Edmonton. Bears' quarterback Blair Zahara struck for two TDs in the first quarter and finished with 148 yards passing. However, it wouldn't be enough as the UBC ground game kicked into gear. Thunderbird running back Akbal Singh ran for over 300 yards for the second straight week. Singh carried the ball a whopping 37 times against Alberta, tallying 305 yards and a touchdown. Singh's touchdown, with less than five minutes remaining, put UBC ahead for the first time in the game and proved to be the winner for the 6-1 Thunderbirds. With the win, UBC remains in a first-place tie with Saskatchewan in Canada West, while Alberta at 2-5 still sit in a tie with Calgary for the conference's final playoff spot.

Halifax - The Saint Mary's Huskies' defence sacked the St. Francis Xavier X-Men quarterbacks nine times on their way to a 53-20 win. The #8 Huskies got touchdowns from 5 different players, including two from Running Back Luis Perez, and three through the air from quarterback Ryan Jones. Jones completed 13 of his 18 passes for 188 yards with the 3 TDs and no interceptions. The Huskies (4-1) dominated the X-Men (1-4), holding the StFX offence to just 180 yards of total offence, mostof that in thefirst half. The lone bright spot for the X-Men was wide receiver Chris Costello with 7 receptions for 101 yards and a TD. Montreal - Matt Trudeau kicked a 16-yard field goal with just under six minutes remaining, lifting the Concordia Stingers to a 19-18 win over the visiting Waterloo Warriors. Trudeau was a perfect 4 for 4 on the day for Concordia, who now move to 6-0 on the season. The spark for the Stingers was Anthony Jean who blocked and returned a punt 40 yards for a TD in the game's opening moments, grabbed an interception and pitched in with three tackles. On offence, Waterloo (3-3) replied with running back Mike Bradley. Bradley carried the ball 27 times for 132 yards and a TD. However, the Warriors had a tough time with turnovers, fumbling three times and coughing up two interceptions.Jason Casey a 5th year Concordia Linebacker,6'1" 210 lbs. was later named CIAU Defensive player of the week. Casey, from North Bay, had 13 tackles, recorded 3 solo tackles, 8 assisted tackles, and a tackle for a loss. He also blocked a field goal in the dying seconds of the game and was instrumental in preserving Concordia's one-point victory.

Kingston - Wyatt Hartley's 156 yards rushing led the Queen's Golden Gaels to their first win of year, 21-12 over the Guelph Gryphons. Hartley rambled for his 156 yards on just 10 carries, including touchdown runs of 7 and 75 yards. The Gryphons (2-4) jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening quarter on Norm Nasser's field goals of 39 and 43 yards, but from that point on it was all Golden Gaels (1-5). The Queen's defence stood tall, led by Chris Robyn's 8 solo tackles. The CIAU's leading receiver James MacLean snagged 7 passes for 79 yards. For Guelph, their offence was all Nasser as he connected on 4 of his 5 field goal attempts. With the loss, the Gryphons have all but fallen out of the OUA playoff race.

Montreal - McGill Redmen scored on their first four possessions and never looked back as they handed the Windsor Lancers their sixth straight loss 47-15. Third string quarterback Philippe Couillard ignited the Redmen attack completing 10 of his 13 passes for 184 yards and 2 TDs. McGill (2-4) racked up 379 yards of total offence. McGill's leading receiver Ben Wearing caught only two passes on the day, but both were for TDs, one 68 yards and the other for 61. Windsor (0-6) did get a good outing from quarterback Morgan Gallagher, who finished up with 156 yards in the air, including 2 TDs and 1 INT.

London ON - In a quiet game offensively for both teams, the #3 Western Mustangs defeated Bishop's Gaiters 22-12. After rushing for 79 yards and a touchdown, Mustangs star running back Fabian Rayne was forced to leave the game with an ankle injury and is expected to be out for at least two weeks. Filling in for Rayne was Mike Laszlo who carried the ball 24 times for 124 yards. Scott Crawley had the other Western (6-0) touchdown and rushed for 58 yards as the Mustangs managed only 39 yards passing. Offensive catalyst for the Gaiters (1-5) was Vincent Begin with 8 receptions for 71 yards. Gaiters only touchdown went to O.J. Burnett who also added 52 yards rushing.
Rouge et Or 49 Marauders 6

Hamilton - The #7 Laval Rouge et Or got back on the winning track in a big way, as they hammered the #5 McMaster Marauders 49-6 in Hamilton. Rouge et Or running back Mathieu Brassard got things going early and just kept on rolling. Brassard scored Laval's first touchdown 2 minutes into the game and then proceeded to rush for 143 yards. Finishing the afternoon with a game high 4 TDs. Laval (4-2) had their way with the Marauder defence, gaining an unbelievable 606 yards of total offence. Ben Chapdelaine did respond with 235 yards passing for the Marauders (4-2). However, the Rouge et Or defence held McMaster to just 59 yards on the ground.

Toronto - The Ottawa Gee Gees jumped out to a 30-11 halftime lead and coasted to a 33-25 win at York University. Ottawa quarterback Phil Cote continued to shine, as he picked apart the Yeomen defence in the first half. Cote finished with 62 yards rushing and a TD, while adding 218 yards in the air. His favourite targets were Ibrahim Tounkara and Rob Harrod. Tounkara caught 5 passes for 99 yards, while Harrod grabbed 7 for 110 yards and a TD. The Yeomen (1-5) did rally in the second half, led by the soft hands of Brian Nugent. Nugent finished the afternoon with 10 receptions for 201 yards and 3 TDs. York quarterback Billy Barbosa also finished strong, completing 26 of 51 for 410 yards, 3 TDs and 3 INTs. The win keeps the Gee Gees undefeated at 6-0 and in a first place tie in the OQIFC with the Concordia Stingers.

Winnipeg - Four first half turnovers by Regina proved to be the difference, as the Manitoba Bisons got back in the win column with a 24-10 victory in Winnipeg. A cold, wet day played a role as neither team was able to muster even 300 yards in total offence. Bison quarterback Shane Munson was an effective 14 of 23 for 97 yards and a TD, as Manitoba (4-2) ended a two game losing skid. Munson also added a touchdown run early in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. Running back Craig Carr had a good day as well for Manitoba, rambling for 101 yards on just 13 carries. Regina quarterback Mike Wong tried to rally the troops and did end up with 152 yards passing, but also added 2 costly interceptions. The Rams now fall to 0-6, still searching for their first CIAU win.

Edmonton - Despite turning the ball over six times and having a punt blocked, the Alberta Golden Bears amassed 411 yards of total offence and got by the visiting Dinos 32-23. 2nd year running back Nathan Connor stepped up for the Golden Bears (2-4) and ran them to victory. Connor carried 21 times for 123 yards, while breaking the plane for 3 TDs. Calgary quarterback Lincoln Blumell did everything he could, rushing for 19 yards and a TD, while completing 25 of 36 for 311 yards and another touchdown. The Golden Bears dropped the Dinos to a surprising 2-4 record. Leading all defenders was Alberta linebacker Darcey Parasynchuk with 12 tackles.
Thunderbirds 30 Huskies 21

Vancouver, BC - Akbal Singh ran for 328 yards and 4 TDs to lead the #4 UBC Thunderbirds to a 30-21 upset of the nation's No.1-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies. Singh was phenomenal Friday night. His 328 yards on the ground is the second highest one game total in UBC history, and 5th highest in CIAU history. Mark Nohra's 351 yards rushing against Calgary in 1997 tops the list for the Thunderbirds. As well, the big game on the ground gives Singh the fifth highest rushing day in CIAU history. Saskatchewan (5-1) however, did have their opportunities in this one. Jason Crumb's 45-yard TD reception late in the first half gave the Huskies a 14-0 lead, but Singh and the Thunderbirds (5-1) stormed back in front of the home crowd. The win puts UBC in a first place tie in Canada West with the previously undefeated Huskies at a record of 5-1.Singh, a 5'-7" 190 lb. running back was later named CIAU Offensiveplayer of the week.

Sackville Mud Bowl - A steady downpour and gale force winds forced the Huskies and Mounties and Mounties into a muddy ground game. Saint Mary's Huskies pulled out an 8-3 victory over Mount Allison Mounties, the lowest score in CIAU Football this season. Mount Allison managed only 7 first downs against SMU's 18, and only 74 yards on the ground to the Huskies' 272. Saint Mary's had a TD called back on a holding penalty. Kickers did all the scoring. Jason Currie of SMU hit on two of six field goals and added two singles. Mounties' David Bradford nailed his only chance, a 41-yard strike. Luiz Perez was named player of the game with 106 yards on 17 carries. The running game accounted for 272 of 346 yards gained my the 3-1 Huskies. Defensively, All-Canadian linebacker Josh Tavares had seven tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble for Saint Mary's. The winds hampered the quarterbacks. Neither team gained 100 yards in the air. Dan Capone managed just 99 yards passing on 11 of 26 and was intercepted twice. Saint Mary's QBs had even more trouble as Ryan Jones completed just 1 of 6 for 6 yards before giving way to J.W. Thompson who went 5 for 7 and 80 yards.

Montreal - Despite being hit by a car on his way to practice Friday, Concordia Stingers fullback Scott Ashworth scored two touchdowns to help give his team a 25-20 victory over the No. 5-ranked Laval Rouge et Or in front of 2,023 fans at Concordia Stadium in Montreal. Ashworth, a fifth-year psychology major from Hamilton, Ont., was riding his bike to an offensive meeting when a car clipped him. He rolled off the hood and then landed on the pavement. He managed to regain his focus by game time Saturday as he carried the ball 13 times for 50 yards and Concordia's only two majors in the game. The rest of the scoring came from kicker Matt Trudeau, who connected on three field goals and two converts, and a safety given up by Laval. Overall, Concordia had a net offence of 525 yards. The quarterbacks, Sean Hoas and Jon Kronemeyer, went 26 for 35 for 357 yards. Their favorite receiver Hugo Carriere caught 12 passes for 157 yards. Laval had a net offence of 284 yards. Running back Mathieu Brassard was the biggest threat. He carried 10 times for 80 yards. He also caught two passes for 23 yards and one touchdown. On defense, Laval safety Pat Boies had 12 tackles, while linebacker Francis Boivin had eight tackles, including a sack. For Concordia, linebacker Graeme Burns led the pack with nine tackles and linebacker Jason Casey had three tackles, two sacks, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

Ottawa: Rookie running back Steve Simon scored two big touchdowns to give his Ottawa Gee-Gees a come-from-behind 29-22 victory over the Queen's Golden Gaels at Frank Clair Stadium in Ottawa on Saturday afternoon. The six-foot-one, 190-pound back from Dollard des Ormeaux PQ carried the ball seven times for 67 yards and the two majors. The Gee-Gees put on an impressive running display. Max Dufault carried eight times for 120 yards, while all-star quarterback Phil Cote rushed 15 times for 102 yards. Ottawa ran for 377 yards on the day. The Gee-Gees net offence was 547 yards. They also picked up 31 first downs. That's tops for the conference this season for both net offence and first downs. Queen's had a net offence of 394 yards and 20 first downs. The pass was the Golden Gaels' biggest weapon. Senior quarterback Beau Howes completed 18 of 29 passes for 322 yards, one TD and one interception. Inside receiver James MacLean was his favorite target with eight passes caught for 193 yards. Defensively, linebacker Chris Robyn was the standout with nine tackles.

Windsor ON - The Windsor Lancers were in a giving spirit for their holiday tilt with the #7 ranked Laurier as three turnovers and a porous defense allowed the Hawks to find the end zone six times in a 49-0 victory. Player of the game Andre Talbot did most of the damage with five receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Equally impressive was RB Justin Praamsma who rumbled for 164 yards of his own and a TD. Even the defense got in on the scoring as defensive end Kojo Millington picked off an errant pass from Lancer QB Ed Smith (11/20 164 yards) for a 93 yard touchdown return. Millington also contributed two sacks and three tackles for the defense that despite giving up 367 total yards, handed the winless Lancers their first shutout defeat of the season. The victory allowed the Hawks (4-1) to move into a second place tie with McMaster who will play host to Laval next week as the OUA and OQIFC begin inter-conference play. Windsor will travel to Montreal and play McGill while Laurier plays host to Toronto before taking on Ottawa in the Nation's Capital a week later.
Dinos 44 Rams 24

Regina - The Dinos roared to an early 20-0 lead and never looked back handing the 1st year Rams their fifth straight defeat 44-24 at Taylor Field. Calgary piled up 315 yards on the ground led by Alan Giacalone's 135. Giacalone scored one TD and caught two passes for 24 yards. Dinos QB Lincoln Blumell was 15 of 26 for 247 yards with two interceptions and a touchdown while his counterpart Mike Wong went 19 of 33 for 364 yards no interceptions and one TD. Wong however was sacked five times by Calgary, twice each by James Robertson and Brian Shewchuck. The win moves the 2-3 Dinos into sole possession of fourth place and the final playoff spot in the Canada West conference. With the addition of 0-5 Regina, Canada West will this year play a semifinal game for the Hardy Trophy.
Huskies 30 Golden Bears 27

Griffiths Stadium - The reigning Vanier Cup champions may have been caught off guard by the 1-3 Golden Bears but still escaped with a narrow 30-27 victory to remain undefeated and likely #1 in the CIAU Top 10. Alberta was actually leading going into the fourth quarter but could not stop the Big Green Machine or their star running back Doug Rozon. At the 11:00 minute mark, Rozon broke through the Bears D and ran 89 yards for the eventual game winning touchdown. It was another stellar game for CIAU second leading rusher as he racked up 292 yards on 22 carries. Todd Lynden was the favourite receiver with six catches for 126 yards and a TD. For Alberta it was another great performance gone to waste for QB Blair Zahara (25/41, 363 yards, 1 INT 2 TD). Alberta's total offense was an impressive 552 yards. Less impressive were the 499 yards given up to Sas katchewan.For his efforts, Saskatchewan Running Back Doug Rozon, 5'-11", 205 lbs., was later named Radically Canadian CIAU Offensive Player of the Week Saskatchewan held a slim lead of 23-20 with four minutes remaining when the fifth year Kinesiology student broke for an 89 yard score, the longest of the conference this season. His 292 yards are also a Canada West season high.
The Bears will try to get back on the winning track next week against rival Calgary while Saskatchewan quest for the perfect season shifts to Vancouver where they'll face nemesis #4 UBC.

MONTREAL - McGill pulled out a last minute 11-10 win over visiting Bishop's at Molson Stadium. The game was a low scoring affair that saw McGill leading at halftime 5-4. The Gaiters fought back to take the lead in the third quarter and with 3 minutes left in the game, Gaiter kicker Andrew Sutherland kicked his third field goal to put Bishop's ahead 10-8. Then Redmen QB Philippe Couillard took over on his own 20 yard line. The sophomore quarterback completed four passes in a row to set up a 37 yard field goal that won the game 11-10 with only seconds left on the clock. The kickers on both sides earned their keep as they accounted for all the scoring. Andrew Sutherland was 3 of 5 for the Gaiters and rookie Anand Pillai made 3 of 4 including the game winner. On the ground, Louis Duchense went 80 yards on just 9 carries for the Redmen, while Gaiters' O.J. Burnett rushed for 95 yards on 21 carries. This was McGill's first win of the season, and drops the Gaiters to an identical 1-4 record.McGill Redmen linebacker Olivier Lefebvre was later named Radically Canadian CIAU Defensive Player of the Week. Lefebvre, a 6'-1", 223 lb. senior from St. Bruno, QC, had 17.5 tackles in his team's 11-10 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters on Sunday. His 17.5 tackles broke McGill's records for most tackles in a single game and most career tackles, as he moved up to 271.5 all time, breaking J.P. Darche's former record of 271. On the day, he recorded 12 solo tackles, 5 assisted tackles, half a sack, as well as a fumble recovery. His play was instrumental in helping McGill earn its first victory in five games this season.

Vancouver - Tied for 2nd place going into this game, UBC Thunderbirds led all the way as they downed Manitoba Bisons 30-12. The Thunderbirds took a 21-0 lead into halftime. Thunderbird QB Shawn Olsen returned after sitting out an exhibition game last weekend, and threw for 160 yards on 8 completions and 3 touchdowns. Brad Goutts was Olsen's favorite target as he hauled in TD passes of 38 and 17 yards. The Thunderbirds defense held the leading rusher in the CIAU, Bison Greg Carr, to 97 yards on 18 carries. Defensive standout for the Bisons was Joey Mikawok as he had 11 tackles and 1 sack in a losing cause. UBC is now in sole possession of 2nd place in Canada West at 4-1 while Manitoba drops to third at 3-2.

Toronto - Returning from a injured shoulder, McMaster QB Ben Chapdelaine led the Mauraders over Toronto. The 1998 2nd Team All-Canadian went 15 for 36 in the air for 266 yards passing with one TD and an interception. RB Marcus Jack provided the bulk of Marauder scoring with three rushing TDs and 77 yards on the ground. Joe Wade scored the other McMaster major, while kicker Derek Livingstone became the Marauders all-time leading scorer with a field goal and four converts. Livingstone entered the game tied with Rob Deluca (1985-88) with 152 career points.Blues QB Noel Carrabs completed 14 of 18 passes for 161 yards and one interception. Toronto points came from kicker George Chilakos with a pair of field goals, and touchdowns by RB James Baskin and receiver Ian Watson. Baskin with 100 yards led the Blues who had a total of 256 yards on the ground.

Ste. Foy - Phil Cote's four rushing touchdowns led the visiting Ottawa Gee Gees to a 34-27 upset of the country's No.4-ranked Laval Rouge et Or. Cote had a phenomenal day in the air and on the ground for the 4-0 Gee Gees. The Ottawa quarterback completed 12 of his 21 passes for 206 yards, including a 30-yard TD strike to Ibrahim Tounkara, putting Ottawa up to stay at 21-7 midway through the second quarter. Cote also carried the ball 16 times against the Rouge et Or (3-1), racking up 76 yards and breaking the plane for 4 TDs. The Gee Gees defence also came up big when they had to, led by Sean Quinn's two interceptions and six tackles. The bright spot for the Rouge et Or was running back Mathieu Brassard. Brassard rushed for 46 yards and 1 TD, while grabbing 6 passes for 91 yards and another 2 TDs in the losing effort. The win puts Ottawa atop the OQIFC with the Concordia Stingers at 4-0, while Laval sits alone in second spot at 3-1.3rd year Ottawa DB Sean Quinn, at 5'-10" and 175 lbs. was later named CIAU Defensive player-of-the-week. Antigonish - Derek Martin's 174 yards passing led the St. Francis Xavier X-Men to their first win of the season, 16-13 over the visiting Mount Allison Mounties. Martin kept the Mounties' defence off balance all afternoon, finding eight different receivers as part of his 18 for 31 day, with 1 TD and 1 interception. The bulk of the St FX scoring however, was left to the strong leg of Jacob Marini. Marini nailed 3 of his 4 field goal attempts, including a 38-yard bomb for the now 1-2 X-Men. The offensive numbers for the Mounties (1-2) looked great on paper, but they came up short in the scoring column. Quarterback Dan Capone passed for 276 yards and a TD, but threw 3 costly interceptions. Sean Dujay snagged two of those interceptions for the "big play" St FX defence, who as a team had four quarterback sacks.

Halifax - An offensive explosion by running back Luis Perez lifted the #9 Saint Mary's Huskies over nation's #7 Acadia Axemen, 39-20. Perez ran over the Axemen defence for 203 yards on 26 carries and scored 4 TD's, two each in the second and fourth quarters. During the 2nd and 4th quarter surges the SMU offensive line dominated the usually capable Acadia DL, repeatedly allowing Perez to break through the line untouched. The turning point may have come just after Acadia scored to bring the game to 14-7. On the ensuing kickoff, Chris Faetz took the ball on his own 15, momentarily bobbled it, then criss-crossing the field broke away three times from packs of Acadia tacklers, and broke into the clear for a 95-yard TD return.It was an error-free outing for Saint Mary's (2-1), who had only five penalties with no fumbles and no interceptions, unlike the visiting Axemen. Acadia was intercepted twice and fumbled once, in a game in which there was little to choose between the two teams offensively. The Axemen (2-1) tallied 18 first downs and 341 yards in total offence, while the Huskies gained 17 first downs and 342 yards in total offence. The offensive standout for the Axemen was quarterback Blaine Scatcherd, who passed for 262 yards with 2 TDs, but was intercepted twice. Sean Mifflen's 28-yard interception return and four tackles led the Saint Mary's defence.

Montreal - Five different Stingers scored majors as #2 Concordia shut out the McGill Redmen 45-0. Hugo Carriere grabbed two touchdown passes, one for 35 yards and the other for 62, in a Shrine Bowl win, much to the delight of the Concordia homecoming crowd. The Stingers' ground game was led by Anthony Brown's 82 yards on 5 carries, including a touchdown. This one was all Concordia from start to finish, as the Stingers (4-0) ran and passed for 475 yards of total offence. Quarterback Josh Sommerfeldt led the Redmen (0-4) charge again this week, completing 12 of 19 for 153 yards passing. Stinger defensive back Loan Duong grabbed the game's only interception and returned it 86 yards for a touchdown. to end the third quarter.
Gaiters 35 Golden Gaels 14

Lennoxville - O.J. Burnett's 194 yards rushing carried the Bishop's Gaiters to a 35-14 win over the Queen's Golden Gaels. In Bishop's first win of '99, Burnett had his way with a Queen's defence that allowed 275 yards on the ground. Bishop's quarterback Matt Sanderson also had a solid outing, connecting on 11 of 24 for 182 yards and 2 TDs. Beau Howes and James MacLean certainly did their part for the Golden Gaels offense. Howes was 17 of 36 for 276 yards, while MacLean caught 11 passes for 178 yards. However, they did not connect for a touchdown for the first time in three weeks. Led by David Stipe's 11 tackles, the Gaiter's defence did a tremendous job of stopping the run, allowing Queen's only 59 yards on the ground.

Hamilton - Bob Clark's fumble return for a touchdown in the game's dying moments lifted the #8 McMaster Marauders to a 39-32 win over the upset minded Guelph Gryphons. Fresh off their season's first win last week, the Gryphons (1-3) played with confidence and gave the Marauders quite a scare. Quarterback Ben Chapdelaine returned to action for McMaster (3-1), completing 23 of 32 for 355 yards. However, Chapdelaine didn't connect for a touchdown in this one and was picked off three times by an active Guelph defence. The Marauders did their scoring on the ground, as Marcus Jack led the way with 13 carries for 87 yards and 2 TDs. The Gryphon's running game responded with Gerrit Stam's 99 yards on 17 carries and 1 TD.
Varsity Blues 27 Lancers 19

Toronto - The Varsity Blues' defence grabbed four interceptions and forced a fumble, leading to U of T's first win of the season, 27-19 over the visiting Windsor Lancers. James Baskin carried the ball 19 times for 85 yards for the Varsity Blues, who as team rambled for 252 yards on the ground with 2 TDs. U of T (1-3) also got an efficient performance at quarterback from Noel Carrabs. Carrabs completed just 9 passes on 14 attempts, but tallied 131 yards and a touchdown. Windsor (0-4) received a great performance at quarterback as well. The Lancers' Morgan Gallagher finished 18 of 36 for 273 yards, which unfortunately for Windsor, also included four interceptions. Defensive back Sean Spence snagged two of those interceptions for the Varsity Blues.

Waterloo - Mike Bradley rushed for 196 yards in the Waterloo Warriors' 16-7 victory over the York Yeomen. Bradley carried the ball 30 times, including once for a touchdown. While Eddie Kim also added 111 yards on the ground, as Waterloo racked up 328 yards rushing on the day. The Warrior defence was up to the task this week, as York quarterback Billy Barbosa completed just 8 of 25 passes for 1 TD and 1 INT. The win moves Waterloo to 3-1, while York now drops to 1-3. The bright spot on offence for the Yeomen was Jeff Johnson. Johnson had 99 yards on 15 carries in the losing cause.
Mustangs 39 Golden Hawks 6

London - Marty Robertson's 102-yard TD return of the opening kickoff sent the Western homecoming crowd into a frenzy, and sparked the Mustangs to a 39-6 victory over the #6 Laurier Golden Hawks. The #3 Mustangs flexed their muscle in this one and dominated Laurier (3-1) all afternoon. The Western offence kept the ball on the ground during a wet day at J.W. Little Stadium, and the plan worked like a charm. The backfield combination of Fabian Rayne and Scott Crawley ran for 307 yards and 3 TDs to lead the Mustangs (4-0). The Western defence also came up big, shutting down the lethal Laurier duo of quarterback Adam Lane and wide receiver Andre Talbot. Lane was only able to find Talbot 4 times for just 23 yards, as the Golden Hawk offence managed just 153 yards in total offence against the determined Mustangs.

Ste. Foy - Mathieu Bertrand's 304 yards passing paced the #4 Laval Rouge et Or to a 26-13 victory over the Bishop's Gaiters in front of 7,294 at PEPS Stadium. The Rouge et Or quarterback completed 18 of 33 passes including one for a touchdown, adding 51 yards rushing on 6 carries. Donald Welman had 99 yards receiving for Laval. Pascal Robitaille hauled in the Rouge et Or's only passing TD of the afternoon. However, it was Laval defensive back Ines Akue who broke the game open on a 40-yard interception return for a touchdown late in the second quarter, extending the Rouge et Or lead to 16-3. Vincent Begin provided the offensive spark for 0-3 Bishop's. Begin grabbed 4 passes for 80 yards, including the Gaiters only major. The win for the (3-0) Rouge et Or sets up an O-QIFC showdown with 3-0 Ottawa Gee Gees next Sunday at Laval .

Sackville - Behind the strong arm of quarterback Blaine Scatcherd, the #9 Acadia Axemen moved to 2-0, with a 41-24 victory over the home town Mount Allison Mounties. Scatcherd was sharp all afternoon, completing 20 of 35 for 237 yards and two touchdowns. Kyle Zurba kept the Mounties' defense guessing as he rushed for 145 yards on 18 carries for the Axemen. Mount Allison QB Dan Capone had a good day in the yardage department, completing 23 of 53 passes for 294 yards. However, he also threw four interceptions. One resulted in a 76-yard return for a TD by Acadia's Ryan Payne, putting the Axemen up 14-3 early in the second quarter. For the Mounties (1-1), Craig Fougere caught 8 passes for 117 yards in a losing effort.

The Huskies' (1-1) ground game was led by running back Dean Jones, who rambled for 149 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Saint Mary's quarterbacks Ryan Jones and J.W. Thompson combined for 160 yards passing, while completing 13 of 20 with 2 TD's and no interceptions. Wide receiver Jay Currie scored one of those touchdowns as part of his 93 yards receiving on the day. It was a great passing day for the X-Men (0-2) as well. StFX quarterback Derek Martin completed 21 of 35 for 317 yards passing and struck for 2 TD's without an interception. However, the Huskies' defence came up big against the run, allowing the X-Men just 38 yards on the ground.

Ottawa - Quarterback Phil Cote did it again in week three, leading the 3-0 Ottawa Gee Gees to a 32-22 win over the visiting McGill Redmen. Cote not only completed 15 of 27 for 210 yards passing and a TD, but also added 94 yards rushing on 13 carries and another touchdown. Running back Maxime Dufault also had a great day for Ottawa, rushing for 110 yards and a touchdown, as the Gee Gees remain undefeated in the OQIFC. McGill quarterback Josh Sommerfeldt had the offence clicking, but came up just short as the Redmen now fall to 0-3. Sommerfeldt finished with 284 yards passing, with 3 TD's as well as 3 interceptions. McGill's Rob Posthumus had 7 receptions for 135 yards and two touchdowns.

Kingston - Carlton O'Brien grabbed 3 passes for 80 yards, including a 60-yard TD reception to open the scoring, as the No.2-ranked Concordia Stingers got past the Queen's Golden Gaels 30-17. This was a great team effort by the Stingers offence, as six different rushers and eight different receivers combined for 529 yards in total offence. Running back Anthony Brown led Concordia (3-0) on the ground, carrying the ball 13 times for 91 yards. QB Beau Howes led the Queen's offence with 159 yards passing. Howes completed 13 of his 22 passes, with one touchdown and one interception in a losing cause, as the Golden Gaels now fall to 0-3 on the season.

Guelph - Guelph running back Gerritt Stam carried the ball an OUA record 37 times in the Gryphons first win of the season Stam was stellar on this afternoon, rushing for 272 of Guelph's 277 yards on the ground, including 2 TD's. The Gryphons' air attack was all Nigel Gold who had three receptions, one for a touchdown, as part of his 153 yards receiving against the 0-3 Varsity Blues. U of T did move the ball well against the Gryphons' defence however, with a touchdown and 133-yard rushing effort from James Baskin. Blues quarterback Noel Carrabs had his best outing of the year, completing 11 of 18 for 173 yards. The two teams combined for 972 yards in total offence at Alumni Stadium.

Waterloo - Andre Talbot's 171 yards receiving, led the #6 Laurier Golden Hawks to a 53-27 homecoming victory over the #8 McMaster Marauders. Talbot's 61-yard TD reception in the first quarter gave the Golden Hawks (3-0) a 14-0 lead and started the party, as Laurier rolled over the visiting Marauders (2-1). Laurier quarterback Adam Lane also had solid day, completing 8 of 17 for 221 yards and 3 TD's. Playing without 2nd Team All-Canadian quarterback Ben Chapdelaine, the McMaster offence sputtered. Rob Gillespie, making only his second career start, managed to complete 14 of 28 for 264 yards, but threw four interceptions, giving Laurier great field position most of the afternoon. They took advantage. First-year Marauder running back Marcus Jack had a good day rushed for 62 yards and a touchdown, while returning 6 kickoffs for 120 yards.

North York - The #3 Western Mustangs handed the York Yeomen (1-2) their second straight loss at York Stadium 29-7, in front the Yeomen's '99 homecoming crowd. Mustang quarterback Mike O'Brien threw two touchdown strikes and passed for 305 yards while completing 14 of 22 to carry the Western offence. O'Brien found Marty Robertson for a 63-yard touchdown early, and that set the tone for the entire afternoon. Fabian Rayne and Scott Crawley scored the Mustangs (3-0) other two TD's. The York offence was frustrated all day and was forced to settle on a single and two Roy Venier field goals of 36 and 42 yards. It will be the battle of the OUA's undefeated next weekend, as the No.8-ranked Laurier Golden Hawks (3-0) travel to London to take on Western.

Windsor - Quarterback Ryan Wilkinson's 330 yards passing carried the Waterloo Warriors (2-1) to a 67-9 rout of the Windsor Lancers. Chris Kreibich was Wilkinson's favourite target in this one. Kreibich caught 8 passes, one for a touchdown, for 218 yards receiving against the 0-3 Lancers. Windsor actually held a 9-7 lead a halftime, only to see the Warriors storm back with 60 unanswered point s in the second half. Waterloo running back Mike Bradley chipped in with 2 TD's and 70 yards rushing on just 6 carries. Windsor only managed 197 yards in total offence against Waterloo, while turning the ball over 3 times.

Winnipeg - In front of close to 5,600 fans in Winnipeg, the #1 Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the #7 Manitoba Bisons 28-9. The Huskies (4-0) stepped things up defensively in this one and stopped the high powered Manitoba offence. Bison quarterback Shane Munson, the country's leading passer coming into thes game, did complete 18 passes for 209 yards, but was also picked off 5 times by the tenacious Huskies' defence. Saskatchewan quarterback Ryan Reid completed 10 of 23 for 155 yards, including 2 TDS and no interceptions. The Huskies' defence was also effective in stopping the Manitoba running game as they held the CIAU's leading rusher Craig Carr to just 68 yards on 15 carries.

Edmonton - Blair Zahara's 5 touchdown passes led the Alberta Golden Bears to their first win of '98, 57-14 over the visiting Regina Rams. Zahara was unstoppable on Saturday, as he completed 21 of 32 for 428 yards passing to go along with his 5 TD strikes. There were two standouts in the receiving core for Alberta, as Jason Bula and Jamie Stoddard each grabbed 2 touchdowns. Bula had 5 receptions for 157 yards, while Stoddard chipped in 7 catches for 160 yards; all part of the (1-3) Golden Bears' 611 yards of total offence on the day. The Rams who are still looking for their first CIAU win at 0-4, were led by wide receiver Jason Clermont's 5 receptions for 122 yards and a touchdown.

Calgary - The #5 UBC Thunderbirds stormed into Calgary with 579 yards of total offence and handed the Dinosaurs a 43-9 loss at McMahon Stadium. Led by quarterback Shawn Olson's 316 yards passing, the Thunderbirds jumped out to 16-0 halftime advantage and never looked backed. The UBC (3-1) attack was effective on the ground as well, as running back Julian Radlein romped for a touchdown and 125 yards on 10 carries. Calgary (1-3) managed only 171 yards in total offence against a motivated Thunderbird defence. Calgary's bright spot was linebacker P.J. Shea who led all defenders with 13 tackles.
Rouge et Or 20 Redmen 14

Montreal - The #5 Laval Rouge et Or overcame the soggy turf at Molson Stadium and an upset-minded McGill Redmen squad, for a big 20-14 victory. The Rouge et Or (2-0) broke open a 10-7 halftime lead, as quarterback Mathieu Bertrand fired a 57-yard TD strike to Simon Veronneau just 35 second into the second half. With a 17-7 lead, Laval's defence then went to work. However, the Redmen (0-2) did have their opportunities. With just a six-point defeat, two missed field goals by McGill kicker Anand Pillai of 29 and 37 yards ended up making the difference. The offensive standouts for Laval were Bertrand and defensive back Daniel Fleury. Bertrand finished the evening 14 of 25 for 212 yards and a touchdown, while adding another 35 yards rushing, including a 2-yard TD plunge for the Rouge et Or's first score. Fleury had a huge day on special teams as he returned 4 punts for 122 yards, which included a 52-yard scamper for Laval. McGill's offensive spark came from the backfield, as Louis Duchesne carried the ball 9 times for 75 yards.

Calgary - The Dinosaurs rallied with 17 second half points, but couldn't come all the way back , as #1 Saskatchewan Huskies held on for a 28-23 win. It was the Saskatchewan (3-0) air attack and the "big play" that was the difference at McMahon Stadium. Huskies' quarterback Ryan Reid completed 13 of his 25 passes for 264 yards, which included TD passes of 39, 54, and 62 yards. Jason Crumb snapped up the 39 and 54-yard touchdowns from Reid, and finished the evening with 110 yards receiving on 4 catches. For Calgary (1-2) it was, once again, quarterback Lincoln Blumell who led the way. Blumell was a fantastic 20 of 31 passing for 296 yards, with one touchdown and one interception. Blumell also added a 1-yard TD run with just under five minutes remaining in the contest, to close the Huskies' lead to five. On the defensive side of the ball, Saskatchewan's Mike Letendre finished with a game high 10 tackles, on a night that saw 824 yards of total offence.

Two of Fougere's grabs were touchdowns, one for 31 yards and the other for 30. The Mounties (1-0) moved the ball well most of the afternoon and tallied 360 yards of total offence. For the X-Men (0-1) it was a different story. The Mount Allison defence clamped down and held St.F.X. in check, allowing only 195 yards in total offence by the X-Men. 145 yards of that St.F.X. offence was in the air, as quarterback Derek Martin finished up 13 of 32, with no TD's and an interception.

Wolfville - Blaine Scatcherd's touchdown pass to receiver Corey Allison with only 1:09 remaining, lifted the Acadia Axemen to a 21-18 victory over the visiting Saint Mary's Huskies. Acadia (1-0), leading 15-3 in the third quarter, watched the Huskies storm back with 15 straight points until the late TD strike to Allison that sealed the win. Allison was making his first career start and responded to the challenge, grabbing 4 passes for 109 yards. Scatcherd had a good afternoon as well, completing 20 of 29 for 234 yards. On the defensive side of the ball, it was Acadia's Adam Puini who provided the big play. Puini tallied five tackles to go along with his three interceptions. For Saint Mary's (0-1), it was quarterback Ryan Jones who took charge. Jones ended the day 13 of 28 for 207 yards, with 2 interceptions and a rushing touchdown.

Montreal - Concordia Stingers' defensive back Sean Gordon grabbed two interceptions, running one back 92 yards for a touchdown, to lead the #5 Stingers to a 39-16 defeat of the visiting Bishop's Gaiters. Concordia (2-0) was in control of this one early, as they responded to a first-quarter Gaiters' field goal, which opened the scoring, with 25 straight points. Stinger quarterback Sean Hoas ignited the offence, completing 11 of his 20 passes for 194 yards and four touchdowns, without an interception. Ben Ouimet had a great game for Bishop's, who now fall to 0-2. Ouimet carried the ball 9 times for 117 yards and a touchdown.
Gee Gees 27 Golden Gaels 22

Kingston - The Queen's Golden Gaels battled to the final whistle, but their comeback fell short as they were defeated 27-22 by the Ottawa Gee Gees. The Gee Gees (2-0) racked up over 400 yards in total offence for the second straight week and it was quarterback Phil Cote who led the charge. Cote went 12 of 24 for 272 yards passing with a touchdown and two interceptions. Ibrahim Tounkara snagged the Cote touchdown as part of his 138 yards receiving for the Gee Gees. Cote was also the Gee Gees leading rusher, carrying the ball 12 times for 64 yards and a touchdown. Queen's quarterback Beau Howes also had a complete day. Howes was 10 of 25 passing for 152 yards with a TD and interception but, like Cote, was the Golden Gaels (0-2) leading rusher. Howes carried the ball 7 times for 93 yards in the losing cause.
Mustangs 26 Gryphons 3

Guelph - The #3 Western Mustangs started slow but finished strong, for a 26-3 win over the Guelph Gryphons. With only a 2-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Mustangs then mounted their charge. Western's Fabian Rayne took control in the second quarter, scoring two touchdowns as part of his 131 yards rushing. Quarterback Mike O'Brien finished up with just 81 yards passing, but did it with his foot instead. O'Brien averaged 51 yards on 14 punts with, an unbelievable, 4 singles. The Gryphons (0-2) were unable to put it in the end zone, but they did get a good performance from Gerrit Stam. Stam fought for 94 yards rushing on 14 carries, against a tough Mustang defence.
Marauders 47 Lancers 1

Windsor - The #7 McMaster Marauders built a 33-0 halftime lead and cruised to a 47-1 win over the Windsor Lancers. Marauder quarterback Ben Chapdelaine was the spark, as he completed 13 of 22 passes for 269 yards and two touchdowns. Ryan Janzen had the hot hands for the Marauders, snagging 6 receptions for 163 yards and a touchdown. McMaster (2-0) amassed 528 yards in total offence and simply dominated the Lancers (0-2) form start to finish. The bright spot for Windsor was running back Gary Carter, who carried the ball 10 times for 68 yards.
Golden Hawks 22k Yeomen 20

North York - A late fourth quarter charge by the York Yeomen wasn't enough, as they fell at home to the nation's #9 Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 22-20. It looked like this one was going to be all defence, as Laurier (2-0) took a slim 3-0 lead into halftime. However, both offences broke loose in the second half, and the Golden Hawks charge was energized by wide receiver Andre Talbot. Talbot grabbed two touchdown passes from quarterback Adam Lane, finishing the afternoon with 8 catches for 154 yards. Lane also had a solid day, as he completed 10 of his 21 passes for 205 yards, to go along with his two touchdown strikes to Talbot. Quarterback Billy Barbosa had a good afternoon for the Yeomen, who now fall to 1-1. Barbosa was 16 of 26 for 248 yards with three touchdowns, but mixed in two interceptions as well. Barbosa was strong in the air, but the Laurier defence halted the York ground game allowing the Yeomen's Jeff Johnson only 63 yards on 16 carries.
Warriors 58 Varsity Blues 10

Waterloo - The Waterloo Warriors got back on the wining track in a big way this weekend, with a 58-10 win over the visiting U of T Varsity Blues. The Warriors (1-1) dominated the Varsity Blues, who now fall to 0-2. With Ryan Wilkinson back at quarterback, the Waterloo offence caught fire. Wilkinson had a great day, completing 15 of 24 for 254 yards passing and two touchdowns. However, the offensive standout in this one, was Waterloo running back Mike Bradley. Bradley took the ball 25 times for 226 yards and four touchdowns. The Varsity Blues' offense was stalled all day and only managed 2 first downs.
Bisons 59 Golden Bears 38

Edmonton - Shane Munson threw five touchdown passes, leading the #8 Manitoba Bisons to their third straight win, 59-38 over the Alberta Golden Bears. The Bisons (3-0) have definitely found their stride, while the Golden Bears (0-3) are still left searching for their first win of the season. Munson finished the afternoon completing 15 of his 22 passes for 286 yards. His prime receiver on the day was Adrian Huntley. Huntley hauled in six passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns. And, it wasn't just the Bison passing game that did the job, as running back Craig Carr and defensive back Mike Plante also chipped in. Carr carried the ball 24 times for 171 yards, while Plante grabbed an interception and returned 6 punts for 149 yards including one for a touchdown. Alberta did get a great performance from quarterback Blair Zahara, who completed 21 of 36 for 392 yards, including 4 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. However, it wasn't enough, as the Alberta defence couldn't find a way to stop the potent Manitoba attack.
Thunderbirds 32 Rams 19

Regina - Shawn Olson tallied 330 yards passing as the UBC Thunderbirds defeated the Regina Rams 32-19. The Rams (0-3) jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first quarter, but the #5 Thunderbirds (2-1) rallied with 32 straight points to claim the win. UBC used the passing game to perfection as Munson completed 16 of 28 to ring up his 330 yards passing, which included one TD pass and no interceptions. Both Dan Delong and Frank Lussier grabbed over 100 yards receiving, while Akbal Singh hauled down the Thunderbirds' only passing touchdown and added another one on the ground as part of his 95 yards rushing. The Rams (0-3) did get a top-notch effort from quarterback Mike Wong who put up 225 yards passing and a touchdown. Regina running back Neil Hughes added 100 yards rushing in the losing effort.
Rouge et Or 23 Golden Gaels 0

The #5 Laval Rouge et Or stopped the visiting Queen's Golden Gaels 23-0. The Rouge et Or (1-0) frustrated the Golden Gaels (0-1) all afternoon. Led by linebacker Etien Vanslette's six tackles, Laval held the Queen's rushing game to just 57 yards, while picking off two passes as well. The offensive attack was fueled by the successful return of quarterback Mathieu Bertrand. He showed no sign of his season ending collarbone injury of '98. Bertrand was 13 of 23 for 169 yards passing, with a touchdown. Adding a remarkable 122 yards on the ground as well. Laval receiver Daniel Trachy also got into the act, hauling down 5 receptions for 53 yards, including a touchdown. For the Gaels, quarterback Beau Howes finished up with 179 yards passing. However, Howes completed only 15 of his 44 passes and threw two interceptions.
Huskies 22 Mounties 1

The #6 ranked Huskies' defense went right to work in their home opener as they defeated the visiting Mount Allison Mounties 22-1. Saint Mary's (1-0) only led by a count of 7-1 at halftime, but poured it on in the second half for the win. This was a true "team effort" for the Huskies, as 3 quarterbacks combined for 16 of 22 passing for 183 yards and 1 TD. However, the star of this one was the Saint Mary's defense. The Mounties were frustrated all day by the Huskies' "D" and were only able to muster 106 yards of total offense, including just eight first downs all afternoon.
X-Men 22 Axemen 13

At Antigonish, the St. Francis Xavier X-Men (1-0) earned a victory in a defensive battle, 22-13 over the #9 ranked Acadia Axemen (0-1). The X-Men went to the air, as quarterback Derek Martin found his favourite target, All-Canadian receiver Jermayne Baldwin, 4 times for 80 yards and a touchdown. Martin had an effective day completing 13 of 20 for 179 yards passing, including 2 TD's. In the St.F.X. backfield, it was all Paul Carty as he carried the ball 11 times for 71 of the X-Men's 80 yards rushing on the day. Acadia could do little to break through the St.F.X. defensive line, as the Axemen finished with just 38 yards rushing. For Acadia, quarterback Blaine Scatcherd had a good day. His line, 25 of 36 for 204 yards passing and a touchdown.
Gee Gees 49 Gaiters 9

This was Ottawa quarterback Phil Cote's day, as the Gee Gees blasted the Bishop's Gaiters 49-9 in Lennoxville. Cote was everything to the Ottawa (1-0) offense in this one. The All-Canadian completed 12 of 17 for 195 yards passing with 3 TD's, while tacking on 15 carries for 79 yards rushing and another 3 TD's. Ibrahim Tounkara also had a great day as he grabbed 7 passes for 121 yards and 2 TD's. The Gee Gees put 461 yards in total offence on the board against the Gaiters (0-1). The bright spot for Bishop's was O.J. Burnett who carried the ball 128 yards on just 9 carries, including a touchdown. Unbelievably, the Gaiters completed only four passes for 22 yards against the tough Gee Gee defense.
Stingers 27 Redmen 16

In front of 4361 fans, the McGill Redmen (0-1) fell 27-16 to the No.4-ranked Concordia Stingers (1-0) in the annual Shaughnessy Cup. Stinger quarterbacks Jon Kronemeyer and Sean Hoas, both had big days for last season's Vanier Cup finalist. Hoas threw for 145 yards on 9 of 13 passing, while rushing for another 25 yards. However, it was Kronemeyer who stole the show. Kronemeyer rambled in for two touchdowns on five carries for 25 yards, adding 105 yards in the air. Mounting yardage in that air attack was veteran tailback Hugo Carriere, who snagged six receptions for a total of 95 yards on the afternoon. David McKinnon was the offensive spark for the Redmen, completing 8 of his 18 passes for 83 yards. Those 83 yards however, were part of the 180 yards in total offense tallied against a relentless Concordia defense.
Marauders 33 Warriors 24

In front of 5,041 fans and McMaster's first sell-out since 1984, the Marauders held off the Waterloo Warriors 33-24. OUA all-star quarterback Ben Chapdelaine led the #8 ranked Marauders (1-0) . Chapdelaine completed 17 of 31 for 319 yards and a touchdown. Michael Linton was Chapdelaine's favourite target Saturday, as he hauled in 6 passes for 178 yards, including a huge 82-yard reception for the home side. The Mac attack was balanced, as Kojo Aidoo added a touchdown and 110 yards on the ground. The Warriors (0-1) traded scores with Marauders most of the first half, but fell behind by 13 midway through the third quarter and just couldn't find their way back. Tailback Mike Bradley had a big day for Waterloo, carrying the ball 13 times for 168 yards and a touchdown.
Yeomen 47 Varsity Blues 1

The "Battle of Toronto" was all York, as the Yeomen (1-0) dominated the Varsity Blues (0-1) for a 47-1 victory at Varsity Stadium. Jeff Johnson was the offensive standout in this one as he carried the ball 25 times for 249 yards and 3 TD's. Yeomen quarterback Billy Barbosa was also effective, as he completed 12 of 21 for 166 yards and 3 TD's. U of T could do little to move the ball against the stingy Yeomen defense. The Varsity Blues' day included just 117 yards in total offence and a costly 4 fumbles.
Golden Hawks 20 Gryphons 0

The Laurier Golden Hawks won an error filled game, 20-0 over the visiting Guelph Gryphons. Laurier (1-0) and Guelph (0-1) combined for 7 turnovers, but it was the Golden Hawks' defense that set the tone. Kojo Millington led the Laurier defensive unit with 4 tackles and 2 quarterback sacks, as the Gryphons were held to just 188 yards in total offense. The Hawks' offensive star was quarterback Adam Lane who connected on 14 of his 26 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown. Linebacker Sean Spencer had a solid day for Guelph, snagging two interceptions.
Mustangs 32 Lancers 10

The Western Mustangs rallied from a 10-1 halftime deficit, to defeat the Windsor Lancers 32-10. In front of 7,500 crazed fans at J.W. Little Stadium in London, the No.3-ranked Mustangs (1-0) stormed back with 31 unanswered points against the Lancers (0-1), who haven't won at Western since 1978. For the Mustangs it was wide receiver James Prescott who ignited the stalled offense. Prescott grabbed five passes for 164 yards, including a 72-yard bomb from quarterback Michael O'Brien midway through the third quarter, putting Western back on track. Fabian Rayne also had a good day on the ground, carrying 16 times for 121 yards.
Bisons 32 Dinosaurs 11

The Manitoba Bisons (2-0) thrilled their fans with a 32-11 victory over the visiting, #7 ranked Calgary Dinosaurs (1-1). And thrill them they did. The Bisons' Mike Plante had an unforgettable day. Along with an interception, Plante returned 3 punts for 167 yards. Included in those numbers was a 127-yard TD return of a missed field goal. The unbelievable return set a Canada West record. Quarterback Shane Munson had great afternoon for the victors, completing 22 of his 26 tosses for 195 yards and 3 TD's. The win was sweet revenge for the Bisons, who dropped two games to Calgary in '98. Dinos quarterback Lincoln Blumell carried the ball five times for 30-yards and was 19 of 30 for 233 yards passing. However, he also gave up two interceptions.
Huskies 56 Rams 12

After a slow start, the #1 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies tallied 35 second quarter points, on their way to a 56-12 win over the Rams of Regina. Leading 11-7 at the end of the opening quarter, the Rams (0-2) had the roof cave in on them in the second frame. The Huskies (2-0) simply controlled play, and amassed 440 yards on the ground and 571 yards in total offense on the day. Doug Rozon carried the ball 14 times for 203 yards and 2 TD's, and Jason Perryman added another 104 yards with a touchdown on the ground. The Saskatchewan defense was tough as well, allowing only a single point after the first quarter and letting the Rams accumulate only 54 yards rushing.
Thunderbirds 18 Golden Bears 8

#2 UBC fought past the visiting Alberta Golden Bears 18-8. The Thunderbirds (1-1) were once again led by QB Shawn Olson 10 for 19 with 141 yards passing and 1 TD. Olson also scampered for 68 yards on the ground and another TD. Dan Rootes led all T-Birds with 11 tackles and grabbed himself an interception, making him the game's defensive standout. The Golden Bears (0-2) were bottled up all evening by the UBC defense and were only able to put together 254 yards in total offense.
