Laurentian University's women's basketball coach since 1979, Ennis accumulated an overall record of 248 wins and 48 losses, including 189 wins and 14 losses in regular season play.
Under his leadership, the Lady Vees claimed two CIAU titles (1990-91), two CIAU silver medals (1985 and 1987), three CIAU bronze medals (1992, 1993 and 1995) as well as seven OWIAA titles (1981, 1987, 1990-93 and 1995). He guided the squad to the CIAU championships during each of his 17 seasons at Laurentian University.
Ennis was named OWIAA Coach of the Year in 1984, 1985, 1991 and 1992 and CIAU Coach of the Year in 1987 and 1991.
While maintaining his position as Head Coach of the Lady Vees, Peter also served as Chairman of Interuniversity Athletics at Laurentian University for 7 years from 1986-1993.
This past summer, he was Head Coach of Canada's National Women's Team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games. He had also been Coach of the gold medal winning Canada Games team in 1985; Coach of the Ontario team for several years; the National Women's Team Assistant Coach from 1989 to 1994; and the Women's Team Head Coach during the 1993 World Universiade Games.
Donations may be made to the Peter Ennis Memorial Bursary Fund and sent to: University Advancement, Laurentian University, 935 Ramsey Lake Rd., Sudbury, ON P3E 2C6
I got to know Peter Ennis a little bit during the Tournament of the America's Olympic Qualifying tournament in 1995, and in the Olympic Warm Up Tournament in the Summer of '96, just a few weeks before the Olympics. Though the Canadian Women's Basketball Team disappointed in Atlanta '96, it should not be forgotten that if not for Peter Ennis, who stepped in to coach not long before the Olympic Qualifying Tournament , that Canada likely would not have made the Olympics. His accomplishments at Laurentian speak for themselves. I heard that many of his former players who are playing professionally in leagues spanning the globe are making a special trip to the Memorial Service in Sudbury. As a member of the media, I would also like to add that he was a classy man who readily gave us a good quote and a good interview on several occasions. Warm up a position in Laurentian's Hall of Fame, and as one of the true legends of women's basketball.
