Events
Types of Orienteering Events:
Point-to-Point
The "classic" orienteering event. Participants start
at timed intervals and race to complete a specified course.
Control locations must be visited in the order specified. Novice,
intermediate and advanced courses available.
Score-O
An "orienteering treasure hunt": participants have
a fixed time interval (usually 60, 90 or 120 minutes) to find
as many controls as possible in whatever order they choose.
Points are awarded for each control based on difficulty and
/ or distance from the start area. Points are deducted for partic
ipants who return to the start area after the course closes.
Ideal for novices.
Rogaine
A wilderness navigation and endurance race. Similar to a Score-O,
but covering a larger area in a longer time period (usually
6, 12 or 24 hours). Participants travel in teams of 2 to 5 people.
For 24 hour events, teams are permitted to camp out in the terrain
or return to base camp for the night. Meal serv ice is provided
at the base camp.
Map Memory
Participants must rely on their memory to travel between control
points without a map. Directions to the next control are displayed
at each control point.
Cloverleaf
Novice participants complete one loop of a point-to- point course.
Intermediate and advanced participants complete additional loops
of increasing difficulty. Points are awarded for the number
of controls visited, as well as the number of loops completed.
Short-O
Similar to a classic point-to-point course, but distances between
control points are shortened. The entire course is designed
to be completed in 20 - 30 minutes. This type of course allows
participants to improve their short-distance running, control
spotting and card punching techniques.
