So if PINE "renames the old Sent Mail folder and then creates the new  
one for all users" and then flags an "Unknown/invalid partition"  
error, the problem has to be with PINE or its configuration- which I  
have never touched

Seems to me the solution is to look at the script that runs at month-beginning
