ABOUT THE ECOLOGY ACTION CENTRE

The Ecology Action Centre (EAC) is Nova Scotia's most
established non-profit, community environmental
organization. The EAC's reputation rests on our
commitment to working for, and with, communities around
Nova Scotia on issues of local and provincial importance.
We play a crucial role in engaging the public in
environmental issues, providing information, initiating
research, and catalyzing local and government action.
Our activities include, but are not limited to, transportation,
marine, wilderness, urban issues, sustainable food
production, alternative energy, salt marsh restoration and
coastal habitat protection and public access.

COASTAL COORDINATOR JOB DESCRIPTION

The EAC's Coastal Issues Committee (CIC) is seeking an
energetic, engaged, and goal-oriented person to implement
the ReConnecting the Coast Initiative. This is an
opportunity to make an impact in how Nova Scotia's coasts
are protected and managed. The Coastal Coordinator will
be expected to achieve concrete gains in coastal resource
planning and protection in Nova Scotia.

The ReConnecting the Coast Initiative is about reversing
the loss of coastal habitat in Nova Scotia through
encouraging heightened awareness of coastal ecosystems
and supporting best practices in coastal management. The
Coastal Coordinator will play a leadership and capacity-
building role in facilitating and coordinating information,
research, resources, and action to address coastal issues
at multiple places and scales around Nova Scotia.

The Coastal Coordinator will work closely with a
grassroots coalition of community and stewardship groups
addressing coastal threats and opportunities facing our
coastal areas and communities. Another component of
the program is to build on the EAC's pilot salt marsh
restoration project in the Bay of Fundy within the context
of a larger emphasis on coastal land use planning, coastal
access, and finding mechanisms for meaningful public
involvement in coastal planning and decision making.

SPECIFIC DUTIES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

 - Take a leadership role in developing and implementing a
coastal campaign around critical coastal issues in Nova
Scotia
 - Raise public, government, and media awareness and
understanding of coastal issues in Nova Scotia
 - Coordinate and provide support for coastal activities of
a wide variety of community level partners, especially
members of the Coastal Coalition of Nova Scotia
 - Represent EAC and CIC at relevant meetings with the
public, regulatory agencies and government representatives
 - Coordinate, produce, and disseminate research and
materials on a wide variety of coastal issues, including
existing legislations and laws
 - Follow up and build on previous and ongoing coastal
habitat protection and restoration initiatives
 - Manage the program within a defined budget and prepare
appropriate reports to funders and advisory committees
 - Attend monthly CIC meetings and work with CIC to
develop proposals and raise additional project funds
 - Contribute to and work within the EAC organization
 - Attract, maintain and supervise volunteers, students, and interns

SKILLS REQUIRED:

 - A thorough understanding of threats and opportunities
facing Nova Scotia's coasts and coastal communities, in
particular issues related to coastal habitat loss and coastal
development
 - University degree in environmental studies, urban and
rural planning, coastal resources management, community
development, or comparable experience
 - Excellent public speaking and writing skills
 - Ability to work with and strengthen grassroots coalitions
 - Project management experience including staff and
volunteer supervision, project administration (financial and
budgeting), project development and proposal writing
 - Planning and organization skills (manage priorities,
complete action plans, and work independently with
minimal supervision)
 - Personal skills (leadership, team oriented, energetic,
motivated, outgoing, persistent, and conscientious)
 - Creativity and ability to take initiative

SKILLS DESIRED:

 - A passionate interest in the health of Nova Scotia's
coastal habitats and communities
 - Field experience (data collection), and a familiarity with
conducting environmental monitoring and coastal habitat
restoration
 - Familiar with the local community, environmental and
stewardship organizations in Nova Scotia
 - Experience working or volunteering for a non-profit
environmental or community group
 - Familiar with municipal, provincial and federal
regulations concerning the protection and restoration of
