WINNIPEG RESUMES FOGGING AFTER CLASH WITH PROTESTERS
WebPosted Tue Jul 20 13:53:12 2004

Winnipeg---Protesters and police clashed early Tuesday morning at a
Winnipeg compound as city trucks attempted to leave to fog for
mosquitoes.

The protest delayed – but only for a short time – the resumption
of Winnipeg's controversial program, which had been suspended over
the weekend.

     INDEPTH: Malathion vs. Mosquitoes

The latest protest came after Mayor Sam Katz on Monday ordered fogging
to resume.

    FROM JULY 19,
2004: Winnipeg mayor orders mosquito fogging to continue Fogging had
been suspended on Saturday night after protesters, objecting to
the use of malathion, blocked the city's trucks.

The protesters want to stop the trucks from driving around the city and
spraying the insecticide, which is toxic to all insects including
beneficial ones. They claim it is dangerous for humans, too.

About 20 anti-fogging activists returned to the city compound late Monday
and early Tuesday to again block the trucks. Police moved in shortly
after 2 a.m. to escort the trucks out.

Some of the protesters left peacefully when police intervened, but
others did not. At least three protesters were handed citations, and one
was arrested.

"They couldn't offer any proof that malathion is effective at reducing
mosquito counts," shouted the 42 year-old woman who was arrested.

"They cannot offer any proof that malathion reduces West Nile virus.
Malathion is an organophosphate nerve toxin and it's killing everyone in
Winnipeg," she said.

    FROM JULY 16,
2005: Groups want Winnipeg to stop 'fogging'

"It was obvious that at least two of them decided they wanted to be the
token arrestees," said Const. Bob Johnson. "In fact one of them decided
that not only did she want to be arrested, but she fought with the police
officers and struggled quite vehemently with them," he said.

Police said the woman was charged with causing a disturbance and
mischief.

City crews resumed fogging about four hours behind schedule.
