Thanks! ____________________________________________________________________________ Hi This is the first of several straw bale projects happening over the summer. It is small, elegant straw bale infill. There will be a number of other opportunities posted in the near future. Kathleen will be keeping track of folks that can't get to the one on the 22nd but would like to be part of plastering and/or working on the main house in July. Best, kim From: Kathleen Naylor <kathleen@heartwood.ns.ca> Date: Mon, 03 May 2004 09:38:03 -0300 Subject: straw bale work party! Hello all...hope spring is finding you well! Here's an invitation to a fun event to welcome spring and summer: We are inching forward with our boathouse, and getting ready to get the bale walls up on the long weekend in May - Sat 22, Sun 23 and Mon 24. This will be a "work party" and not a workshop per se. This means that the focus will be on getting the bale walls up, not on learning the whole history and process of straw bale building in detail. Kim Thompson will be our bale-raising leader. We welcome anyone who is ready and willing to spend a day or more moving bales, making custom bales, notching and fitting bales around posts, etc. In order to help things run smoothly, we'll begin at 9 am each day with an overview and tutorial of what to do, so it's great to arrive early so that everyone gets the same teaching. Our boathouse (workshop) is about 15 x 22 feet exterior, a rectangle with a few doors and window bucks to be placed in and worked around. Upstairs, we'll be making custom bales to fit into the triangular gable ends. It's not a complicated building (I know, they all say that) and we anticipate that the bales will be done that weekend. Then we'll plan and begin the earth plastering very soon afterward. Because it is not a huge project, we will probably have a group of 8-10 folks for these days...and the invitation for plastering parties will be for larger numbers! We'll be providing a simple lunch, snacks and drinks to the working crew on these days. If you'd like to camp out, you are welcome to stay. The facilities are primitive at this point! It's a good idea to bring a water bottle, a dust mask or kerchief, and gloves, and to wear clothes that can get dirty. Long sleeves are best for working with straw. And unfortunately, it might be a good idea to bring a bug hat/jacket or spray if you use it. A tape measure is useful as there are never enough, and an exacto knife if you have one. (I recommend labelling your stuff somehow so that you leave with your own toys!) Please contact Jody or me directly to let us know of your interest and availability, and which day(s) you would like to come. When we hear from you, we'll give you directions on how to find the site, which is in Chester Grant. Our home number is 275-3535. (Please note this phone number is not accessible to us at the building site.) Thanks! all the best, Kathleen -- Kathleen Naylor Program Manager HeartWood, RR #7 Bridgewater, Nova Scotia B4V 3J5 phone: (902) 543-8531 fax: 543-8245 kathleen@heartwood.ns.ca www.heartwood.ns.ca ____________________________________________________________________________ Did a friend forward this to you?
