STEWART, Colin - A well-known and respected environmental biologist
Colin
Stewart, 50, died at home, March 15, 2004, as a result of cancer. Born
in
Ottawa and raised in Toronto and Winnipeg, Colin came to Nova Scotia as
a
teen with his love of the outdoors and Canada's National Parks already
developed. He graduated from Dalhousie University, and after a short
term
with Fisheries Research in St. Andrew's N.B., he pursued a career in
environmental research and consulting. He is best-known for his role as
Nova
Scotia Coordinator of the WWF Endangered Spaces Campaign, which resulted
in
the identification of significant wilderness areas in Nova Scotia and
the
legislation to protect them. Colin worked tirelessly with all levels of
government industry and non governmental organizations to protect areas
as
provincial parks, protect the integrity of urban parks and to foster
understanding and cooperation between environmentalists and industry.
One of
his greatest talents was his ability to work with people to bring
differing
groups to a consensus. Colin contributed to many committees and
commissions
over the years, including the National Roundtable on the environment and
the
Economy and the Nova Scotia Forest Technical Advisory Committee. He was
a
member of many environmentally oriented organizations including the
Canadian
Parks and Wilderness Society, the Halifax Field Naturalists, the Nova
Scotia
Nature Trust and was involved in the development of groups such as the
Nova
Scotia Trails Federation and the Federation of Nova Scotia Naturalists.
Colin's work as an environmentalist was recognized by the Canadian
Nature
Federation with the Douglas H. Pimlott Conservation Award, by the HFN
with
the creation of the Colin Stewart Conservation Award and by the Friends
of
McNabs Island and the Eastern Canada Piping Plover Recovery Team with
special awards. Unitl shortly before his death, Colin was actively
involved
in the project to restore Point Pleasant Park. Colin was involved for
many
years with competitive cross country skiing in Nova Scotia and served on
the
NationalBoard of Directors for Biathlon Canada. A lifelong athlete, he
ran,
hiked, biked, skied, or canoed nearly every day. Travelling, backpacking
and
camping, especially in remote areas, were his passions. His many
interests
included archeology and ancient civilizations, coin and stamp
collecting,
photography and a wide range of reading. In support of his daughter's
competitive swimming, Colin became an official advising the highest
level
badge. Colin is survived by his father, William "Bill"; sister, Shelley
(Don); nephews, Kevin and Brandon; his wife, Betty Hodgson; daughter,
Jennifer; sisters-in-law, Patty (Don), Joan (Terry); brother-in-law,
Fred
(Helen); numerous nieces and nephews; extended family and friends. Colin
was
predeceased by his mother, Noreen (McNicoll); nephew, David Orr.
Visitation
will be 2-4, 7-9 p.m. Thursday in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, 2666 Windsor
St.,
Halifax. The funeral will be held 2 p.m. Friday in Calvin Presbyterian
Church. In lieu of flowers, Colin had asked that donations be given to
the
Halifax Field Naturalists, Nova Scotia Nature Trust or any other
environmental organization. On-line condolences to: 1016@alderwoods.com
