If live in HRM and ride Metro Transit, you might be interested in using a
newly developed "bus route finding system".

The web-based software allows a person to specify a starting location, a
destination, and a time of arrival. The software then determines the best
bus [or buses] to take. If a transfer is necessary, the transfer point
and time of the next bus is given.

The user selects the starting point by selecting a point on a map. Once
this is done, the use selects the destination. Finally, the expected time
of arrival is chosen [the user can specify weekday, Saturday, and Sunday
or Holiday]. The software then displays the best route.

You can 'test drive' the software on the web site:

There have been some surprising results. For example, it is often quicker
to take two buses and transfer than take one bus. Also, the system
highlights some of the more poorly serviced areas of HRM and the time
required to travel from, say, Halifax to Bedford.

Metro Transit supplied us with the bus route information [times and stops]
and computing facilities, while HRM supplied us with the map database.
Transport Canada's MOST [Moving On Sustainable Transportation] programme
funded a graduate student. Whale Lake Research Institute managed the
project.
