This year’s theme is: Healthy Communities – Global Perspectives/Co-operative Solutions October 18th and 19th, 2003 SOURIS, PEI Come join the Canadian Cooperative Association (CCA) at this year’s international retreat, Healthy Communities – Global Perspectives/Co-operative Solutions, focusing on raising awareness of what makes a healthy community and examining best-case practices we can use in our own communities. Co-operatives play an innovative role in Canada’s health care system, particularly in community-based clinics and home care. The co-operative model in Canada and overseas has distinct advantages in several priority areas of the health care system, including primary health care reform, home care, rural and remote health, and Aboriginal health. Please join CCA and learn about Healthy Communities – Global Perspectives/Co-operative Solutions. Health and Environment organizations are invited to set up a display at no charge. There is no cost to this event but registration is limited to 40 people. To request more information and a registration form please contact Maureen MacLean (Member Engagement Coordinator) and Sarah Shima at sshima@nb.sympatico.ca. Presentations will be made by: 1. Jennifer Melanson, Executive Director, The Atlantic Canadian Organic Regional Network (ACORN) Celebrating Food Security models in our communities, Jennifer will take examples from co-operatives, including ACORN, SunRoot Farm, FoodShare, and others to highlight successful models of community food security programs, sustainable development and community health. 2. Colleen Cameron, Chair of the Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority Colleen was involved in setting up the first community health board in Antigonish and is a member of the PATH Network (People Assessing Their Health). PATH is a process for community organizations to assess the health of their communities and develop their own Community Health Impact Assessment Tool. Colleen used this process with a non-government organization in Kolkata, India, this past spring. 3. Lisa Jenson, United Way Halifax Lisa will speak about her experience in Costa Rica with co-operatives and health promotion. 4. Ganga Adhikari, Nepal Ganga is currently a student at Coady international Institute, and will discuss a Health Co-operative initiated by SAHAMATI, a Nepalese organization.
