Summer schedule of Nova Scotia Nature Trust Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora
guided walks:

To increase awareness of these rare and endangered plants, the Nature
Trust is once again holding several guided walks, in co-operation with
different groups. Please register for the walks and monitoring sessions
(see below for information on monitoring) by calling Meredith Flannery
at the Nova Scotia Nature Trust at (902) 425-5263 or e-mailing
meredithf@nsnt.ca.

Quinn’s Meadow – Saturday, August 9, 2003. 1 pm. Quinn's Meadow is a
large fen located alongside the lower Clyde River, Shelburne County.
Join us in a guided walk and search for rare and endangered ice-age
relict plants of the Atlantic coastal plain, including Thread-leaved
Sundew and Long's Bulrush. Bring along a hat, camera, rubber boots,
long pants, fly dope, sunscreen, snack, and water. This walk is
approximately 4 hours, including some moderately strenuous walking
through thick shrubbery and spongy Sphagnum.

Gillfillan Lake Nature Reserve – Saturday, August 16, 2003. 11 am.
Gillfillan Lake Nature Reserve is situated along the northern most
reaches of Gillfillan Lake. The reserve, owned by the Tusket River
Environmental Protection Association, is home to some of Canada’s most
threatened Atlantic Coastal Plain Flora including the Threatened
Plymouth Gentian, the Endangered Pink Coreopsis and the provincially
rare Virginia Meadow-beauty. Bring along a hat, water, snacks, solid
footwear, a camera, bug repellant and sunscreen. There is a short walk
to the lakeshore and the trip will take 3 to 4 hours.

Ponhook Lake Nature Reserve – Saturday, August 30, 2003. 11 am. See
rare and endangered ice-age relict plants of the Atlantic coastal plain,
including Redroot, Golden-crest, Buttonbush, and Virginia Meadow-beauty,
on the shores of Ponhook Lake. Bring a hat, rubber boots, sneakers, or
sandals, fly dope, sunscreen, snacks, water, and camera. 2-3 hours of
easy but careful walking along lakeshore cobbles and muck.

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust is a non-profit conservation organization
that works with private landowners to preserve the province’s remaining
natural areas. For more nformation, phone 902-425-5263, visit

The Nova Scotia Nature Trust's Coastal Plain Stewards project is
designed to encourage
stewardship and protection of Nova Scotia's imperiled Atlantic Coastal
Plain Flora. We accomplish this in a number of ways including co-hosting
guided walks and engaging people in active stewardship through
monitoring.

Three guided walks (listed above) are scheduled for the month of
August. Each walk will be followed by a short monitoring session for
those interested in becoming involved in the monitoring Atlantic Coastal
Plain Flora. As part of the monitoring program, monitors survey sites,
once or twice during the flowering season, where rare species occur and
report on the health of the sites. Being a monitor means that you are
provided with hands-on training and a variety of support materials,
including maps, photos of
plants, and an identification booklet.

Attending the guided walks or becoming involved as a monitor are both
wonderful ways to enjoy a few hours of Nova Scotia's natural wonders.
Walks are informational and packed with photo-opps. Please feel free to
give us a call to find out more or to register for a walk or monitoring
session or both!
