The NO ONE IS ILLEGAL Filmfest! 6:30-10pm Friday, July 25th Scotiabank Auditorium Marion McCain Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Building (corner of University and Seymour St.) Afghan Stories (2002) 6:30pm Afghan Stories opens at the World Trade Center just before the Americans bomb Afghanistan. From New York to the frontline in Afghanistan, filmakers spend time with several Afghan refugee families. They meet a member of the royal family who was tortured by the Taliban, a doctor and journalist stuck in a one room apartment with their four children, a relief worker trying to rebuild his country one road at a time, an Islamic elder who dedicated his life to peace and more. A unique and intimate film, Afghan Stories documents the torment, resolve and dreams of a people whose lives have been torn apart by war. Rabbit Proof Fence (2002) 7:30pm This film explores a dark time in Australian history when half-caste (or non full-blooded) Aboriginal children were forcibly taken from their mothers in an attempt to assimilate them into White society and ultimately breed them out of existence. The film comes at a time when the Australian government and its refugee-rejecting Prime Minister John Howard are still refusing to publicly apologise to indigenous people for the way they were treated by white settlers. Woomera (2002) 9:15pm Woomera is one of six privately run concentration camps used by the Australian Government to enforce its policy of mandatory detention of 'illegal entrants'. It incarcerates refugees - including young children - from Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq. This inspiring video highlights the desperation and courage of the refugees and contains remarkable footage of a break-out which embarrassed the Australian Government and gave an enormous boost to the growing campaign against mandatory detention. $4 Suggested donation A Benefit for Mobilization for Global Justice to Help Stop the WTO. www.uberculture.org/mobglob 3. Please read the message below from SINALTRAINAL (Colombian Food and Drink Workers' Union). Eight union leaders have recently been assasinated by paramilitaries financed by Coca Cola management. Another reason to feel guilty drinking America's favorite transnational --communities in India who don't have enough water woes as it is are facing severe water shortages and polluted water as a result of Coca Cola's operations there. Coca Cola has assigned the "problem" to its PR department. Coke has also admitted to rigging tests and a coke employee was fired for drinking pepsi. Coca Cola is the top US investor in India. The consumer campaign will begin as of July 22, 2003 and will have, in its initial phase, a duration of one year. The Second World Social Forum declared July 22 the International Day Against Coca-cola.If you need help, materials, information or speakers, contact the Colombia Solidarity Campaign, PO Box 8446, London N17 6NZ tel : 07932 034477: Email: colombia_sc@hotmail.com website: www.colombiasolidarity.org.uk On another topic also having to do with evil American companies --if I haven't already bugged any of you about sending a letter to support our current campaign to stop Canadian, American, and Australian mining firms from mining Indonesia's protected/conservation areas....please do so, if you don't do it for me, do it for the trees and the orangutan. It is at a very critical time right now when the Indonesian government could make a decision at any time to either cave in to the incessant pressure from the mining multinationals or uphold Indonesia's forestry law that bans open-pit mining in protected areas. Honestly, we have made it so easy... just go to http://www.foei.org/cyberaction/indonesia.php ....all you have to do is read the letter, if you agree then fill in your name and details. All that is required is your last name and country. The letter is then emailed in your name to government and embassy officials listed on the page. We have received tremendous support thus far, Elizabeth May/Sierra Club has sent a personalized letter and over a thousand people from over 43 countries have sent the letter .... but we still need you!!! and your friends! Many thanks, Tracy 4. The Sierra Youth Coalition in partnership with McGill and Concordia Univeristy proudly present THE 5th ANNUAL NATIONAL SUSTAINABLE CAMPUSES CONFERENCE October 2-5, 2003 - Montreal :: CONFERENCE OVERVIEW :: It is with great pleasure that the Sierra Youth Coalition (SYC), the youth-run arm of the Sierra Club of Canada, announces the 2003 Sustainable Campuses Conference. The Sustainable Campuses Conference provides students, academics, faculty, administration, community groups, professionals, and activists from across Canada with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop skills on how to promote sustainability on campus. This gathering is an innovative, creative and practical skills-building event designed to enable participants to use the resources of their community towards the improvement of the quality of life of the people and of the ecosystems on campus. :: WHERE AND WHEN :: Montreal, Quebec from 2nd - 5th October 2003 at McGill University. :: CONFERENCE FRAMEWORK :: This year’s Sustainable Campuses conference will continue to inspire and support participants through a variety of skill-building workshops, key speakers’ presentations and student-run group presentations on campus success stories. In addition, the conference will provide a truly bilingual atmosphere that will allow participants to function in their language of choice. ::: Key Note Speakers Various keynote speakers will be addressing the participants during the evenings of the conference. They are well-renowned professors and activists who have made themselves known in Canada and abroad by their inspiring and ground breaking work in the filed of campus sustainability. All presentations will be followed by discussion sessions. ::: Hands-on Workshops The best way to learn something is by doing it. The hands-on workshops will allow students to test the knowledge they already have and gain new skills such as how to do a waste auditing, how to build your own compost bin and much more. ::: Capacity Building Workshops The capacity building workshops will deal with a variety of topics such as fundraising, human rights, campaign development, influencing policy making, starting a sustainability office, educating about sustainability, lobbying the Campus administration, environmental racism and much more. This year’s highlight workshop will train students on how to use Canada’s first Campus Sustainability Assessment Framework (CSAF). ::: Campus Sustainability Successes Learning from those who have already implemented successful projects can help guide new project leaders in the right direction. These best practices are inspirational sources of student activism and offer valuable advice on how to start a successful project. ::: Field Trips Some projects are too large to be brought to the conference; therefore it is important to take the conference to these projects. Field trips add a great dynamism to the flow of the conference and are a powerful inspirational tool given that students witness the real life impact that a project can have on a campus and often in the surrounding communities. :: REGISTARTION :: Registration forms are available from our website http://www.sierrayouthcoalition.org/en_CA/SusCamp/Campus.htm If you would like to receive updates about the conference, please submit your name, school and e-mail address to sarah@sierrayouthcoalition.com. :: TRANSPORTATION :: Although the Sierra Youth Coalition cannot guarantee travel subsidies at this point, we will continue exploring possibilities to alleviate the cost of transportation for some participants. Please contact us for more information. :: ACCOMOMDATION :: The Sierra Youth Coalition is currently negotiating especial fees with hotels and hostels in Montreal to accommodate all participants’ budget. We are offering the possibility of billeting participants with one of our many volunteer in the city. :: INFORMATION :: For more information on this year’s Sustainable Campuses Conference please visit our website at http://www.sierrayouthcoalition.org/en_CA/SusCamp/Campus.htm or contact Conference Coordinator Sarah Schiff at sarah@sierrayouthcoalition.com or by phone at (514) 398-4947. ____________________________________________________________________________ Did a friend forwarded this to you?
