- “The Digby Neck Mega-Quarry- Beyond NIMBY and NAFTA” - Tuesday, November 26, 7:00pm to 9:00pm - ScotiaBank Auditorium, FASS Building (across from the Dalhousie Student Union) MEDIA ADVISORY Dr. Janet Eaton brings “The Digby Neck Mega-Quarry: Beyond NIMBY and NAFTA” to Halifax. First, Digby Neck. Next, Digby. Then, Acadia University in Wolfville. Now, Dr. Janet Eaton, internationally respected consultant in the field of the global corporate economy and champion of sustainable community development, brings her hard-hitting power-point “The Digby Neck Mega-Quarry: Beyond NIMBY and NAFTA” to Halifax. Dr. Eaton’s powerful presentation exposes the myriad negative economic and environmental impacts associated with a U.S.-based project that is so misguided that it threatens the internationally acclaimed local sustainable economy, the traditional livelihoods, the way of life, and the very landscape — not to mention already endangered right whales and the vital and fragile local marine ecosystem — of one of the most beautiful corners of Nova Scotia, Digby Neck and the Islands. The first place the quarry proponents plan to obliterate with their first assault on the native basalt is the very site of the once thriving coastal fishing community of White Cove that inspired Julia Sauer’s award-winning classic children’s book Fog Magic. Confronting Energy Minister and MLA for the Digby-Annapolis Gordon Balser at the Legislature last Wednesday, Mark Dittrick, Interim Director of Sierra Club’s Atlantic Canada Chapter, said "This is like bulldozing the Anne of Green Gables House and putting an open pit coal mine there for the sake of a few jobs." Dr. Janet Eaton is Executive Director of the Institute for Global Creative Perspective. She has taught in the Political Science Department of Acadia University and is Sierra Club of Canada’s International Liaison to the Corporate Accountability Committee of the U.S. Sierra Club. “The Digby Neck Mega-Quarry Beyong NIMBY and NAFTA” Tuesday, November 26, 7:00pm to 9:00pm ScotiaBank Auditorium, FASS Building (across from the Dalhousie Student Union) Sponsored by the Atlantic Canada Chapter of Sierra Club of Canada, the Partnership for Sustainable Development of Digby Neck and Islands Society, Dalhousie University’s Society for Corporate Environmental and Social Responsibility, and the Dalhousie University Economics Students’ Association.
