I'm in the field next week, so there might not be any sust-mar. Depends on
whether I can find an internet hookup in the subarctic. Sorry. ~Paul

Folks,

I think we would be remiss if we did not mention on sust-mar the passing
of Kate Carmichael. Since I never met Kate, and since I am by no means an
expert in matters of urban planning, I will keep this brief. Perhaps
someone who knows more will send something more eloquent and informative.

Over the past few years, I have heard many positive things about the good
work Kate was doing towards the revitalisation of Halifax's downtown.
Urban sprawl is a problem is many cities. Halifax is no exception. We are
assaulted by huge "big box" retail outlets, in areas accessible only by
private car. These threaten wildlife habitat, hurt public transit, and
cripple local retailers.

Haligonians should be grateful to Kate Carmichael for the work she did in
combating that trend -- in working to revitalise our downtown core. We
will benefit from her labour and vision for many years to come.

~paul :)
