Irondale Announces an evening of theatre created by and about Youth in
Care

Two groups of youth have been working with ensemble members for the last
month on the creation of new thaetre works presenting some of the issues
and realities of "life in care". These youth either are, or were living in
care - foster homes, group homes, on the street. Each of these plays
stand as powerful, dramatic and insightful exploration of the life
experienced by countless young men and women as they grow up outside the
framework most of us understand as a family.

"No Labels" - People who end up in care are often not seen for who they
really are. Instead, when they are outside of a traditional home, they are
labeled by doctors, social workers, teachers, their peers and society in
general. Labels like trouble maker, schizo, druggy, juvenile
delinquent, stupid, useless, punk, lazy, homewrecker, messed up, homeless
and drunk all abound. Our show is about striping away labels to reveal the
vast differences of these individuals, and to describe why they are in
care.

"Walking Out of Darkness" - Always thinking never knowing
Just what's coming
As we round the bend
The road twists and turns
As we follow
Unsure of where it ends

This piece has been created by the youth on stage, drawn from their
knowledge and experience. It is a message of struggle and hope.

Both of these theatre works owe a debt to a young woman who was involved
in a project with the ensemble last year. She has written her story of
living in care, and courageously shared it with us and these youth. Her
story was the foundation on which both of these pieces have been built.

THERE IS A PERFORMANCE OF BOTH OF THESE PLAYS THIS TUESDAY JUNE 12TH
AT 7PM. HAPPENING AT 2277 MAITLAND ST. IN IRONDALE'S STUDIO SPACE.
ADDMISSION IS PAY WHAT YOU CAN. CALL 429-1370 FOR MORE INFORMATION.
