Coming this spring! The Outdoor Resource Directory from Shunpiking Magazine Ecology Action Centre, Nova Scotia Sport and Recreation Commission are teaming up with Shunpiking Magazine to bring out the second edition of the Outdoor Resource Directory. The premier edition of the ORD appeared in 1997. It was highly regarded by members of the outdoor recreation and sports communities because of its inclusiveness and breadth of information. It was a comprehensive directory for all participating in outdoor recreational activities - from backyard gardeners to surfers, from sport associations to those working to preserve and enhance our environment. Some five pages were provided to list environmental groups and projects. One environmentalist said "it became my bible and it was an indispensable resource for finding likeminded people and groups." Many people commented that "we did not know so much was going on in Nova Scotia." The Outdoor Directory is a unique initiative. As far as we know, it is the only regional directory of its kind in North America - it provides free listings to ensure comprehensiveness. It is distributed free to ensure a broad popularity. It involves thousands of hours of voluntary work. Its goal goes beyond creating a list: it involves creating a sustainable forum to enhance participation within and amongst the many spheres of outdoor and nature activities. For this to happen, we need your support and participation. We aim to make the 2001-2002 edition even more comprehensive and attractive, e.g., to expand both listings and editorial regarding Nova Scotia's environment and the challenges we face. We're inviting any community or environemental group who'd like to list in the 2001-2002 ORD to contact us by phone, email, drop in, or visit our website. Basic listings are FREE so it is a good way for any size group to promote themselves to the Nova Scotia outdoor community. We seriously encourage you to add a descriptive listing (at 25 words/$40, each additional word $1.50). You may also cross reference in other categories for a nominal fee of $10 each. The Outdoor Directory provides a tremendous opportunity for non-profit and volunteer associations to popularize their program and attract new interest. It is an ideal venue for promoting your initiative to the public. It is also a great information source for networking among outdoor recreation and environmental groups and finding outdoor activities and services. The ORD is designed to be accessible to everyone. High impact display ads are available beginning at $199 for a business card size. The initial print run is 60,000 copies, distributed across the province, of which 15,000 will be held back for distribution in the second year of the ORD's shelf-life. The second edition features improved design and paper stock, greater ease-of-use, and greater opportunities for high impact, colour ads. It will provide Nova Scotians with the information they need to get outdoors, discover and participate. Please feel free to contact us for more information, or visit us at www3.ns.sympatico.ca/gtate where you can also fill in the on-line form. If you missed our first edition, drop us a line and we'll be glad to send you one. If you know of other groups or businesses that might be interested in listing or advertising with us, please forward this message on to them. We are making every effort to verify listing information, too. Every little bit helps.
