Dear Sustainable Maritimes list, As many of you may know, a young man from PEI (and a friend of mine) is on the cover of the Dec. 13 issue of TIME magazine. This has spurred a frenzy of letter-writing on my part, as I am keen to take advantage of this opportunity to help "my neighbours" realize the significance of the WTO and corporate globalization in general. Here is one letter, which I am sending to The Halifax Chronicle-Herald. all the best, Jan ****************************************************** title: Maritimers Protect Democracy Dear Editor, Maritime Canadians are among those in the forefront of a global movement to stop corporate globalization and promote democracy and sustainability. Maud Barlow, the volounteer chairperson of the Council of Canadians (1-800-387-7177) is a native of Digby County. Wolfville's Janet Eaton <jeaton@fox.nstn.ca> is now known wherever the internet reaches for her energetic and intelligent work to bring sanity to our world. (A friend in Switzerland once sent me a list of articles by Janet Eaton documenting the ecological consequences of the Kosovo war, not knowing that she is practically a "neighbour"!) And, if you look at the Dec. 13 issue of TIME magazine, you will see a young man from PEI, Aaron Koleszar, bing handcuffed and roughed-upp by Seattle police. I have since talked with Aaron's mother and found out that this was only the beginning for Aaron of very brutal treatment by the police. (Meanwhile, a few people who smashed store windows and engaged in looting were ignored by police, even when nonviolent protesters caught those engaging in the vandalism so police would arrest them!) At first I assumed the Seattle police chief resigned over the excessive brutalty but a correspondent from the Seattle area informs me he actually resigned over not having been hard enough at the outset! Apparently this web site provides a good description of how disconcerting it was for the powers-that-be to have the protesters sort of running the show: http://www.seattletimes.com/news/local/html98/prot_19991216.html . One thing is clear: the police were brutal. They even went after Seattle residents who were out on the streets trying to figure out what was going on. While the protesters did succeed in waking many people up to the dangers posed by corporate globalization, so much is left to be done. Seattle has lost a "moderate" police chief, when what is really needed is new governments which will not sign away our birthrights in the name of "free trade". I just got a press release from Aaron today. He says: "This is not about me being arrested or citizens being assaulted, it is about the WTO and corporate exploitation. We won this battle, and we're ready for many more. Everything they throw at us only makes us stronger and more determined to work together to wrest control from undemocratic entities like the WTO and transnational corporations, and place it where it belongs - in the hands of the people!" Sincerely, Jan Slakov, Weymouth, NS, B0W 3T0 (902) 837-4980 ************************************************************ Note to journalists: To arrange an interview with Aaron Koleszar please call: 902.659.2570 or email <aok@eudoramail.com> **************************************************************** Note: Both Aaron and I are active on the Renaissance Network e-mail list: CDR (Citizens for a Democratic Renaissance) home page -> http://cyberjournal.org ~================================================~ To subscribe to the cyberjournal simply send an empty message to: <cj-subscribe@cyberjournal.org> ~================================================~ To keep posted on the democratic renaissance send an empty message to: <renaissance-network-subscribe@cyberjournal.org>. We rely on food as our ultimate energy source and the means to secure good food must ultimately be nonviolent"... -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- The preceding message was posted on Sustainable Maritimes (sust-mar) -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- Looking for an old message?
