An opinion piece in today's (Mon 9 Aug) Herald picks up perfectly where our recent sust-mar discussion left off. If you receive this in time, you'll find it at: http://www.herald.ns.ca/cgi-bin/home/secfront?1999/08/09+Opinion But to summarise ... Larry Hughes (Dal Engineering prof, Whale Lake Research Institute consultant) writes that the policies of the big-3 provincial parties are shortsighted when it comes to transportation. Twinning a dangerous highway to save human lives is a good objective ... but the same can be accomplished in better ways. We should not limit ourselves to thinking only of the private auto. Other options, namely better enforcement of traffic laws, and increased investment in long-haul bus and rail transport will reduce highway fatalities *and* they are kinder to the environment, and our health. What's more, other options are cheaper than the $112 million that the Hamm-sters plan to spend on highways. But don't take my word for it ... check out p. B1 of today's Herald. RSVP if you'd like me to email it to you (off-list). ~paul :) -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- You received this because you are subscribed to "sust-mar", the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list.
