Dear Mr. Falvo: Your letter to Mr. MacLellan, has been forwarded to me for response. You are probably aware that the Liberal government over the past few years has been active in the promotion of sustainability. In 1997 the government introduced and passed the Wilderness Protected Areas Act. This act provide for the protection of 31 wilderness areas in the province. In fact, the Liberal government in 1997 received a Gold Leaf Award from the Canadian Council on Ecological Areas. More recently, the Liberal government introduced and passed , "An Act to Amend Chapter 179 of the Revised Statutes, 1989, the Forests Act". The purpose of this act is to make the forests of Nova Scotia sustainable. The Department of Natural Resources and the department of the Environment are very conscious of the necessity to preserve our environment and are continually working toward that objective. Public transit is a responsibility of the individual municipalities. Any apportionment of the highway budget to public transit would have to be looked ta if a request for funding was made by a municipality. Thank you for taking the time to express your concerns. -*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*- You received this because you are subscribed to "sust-mar", the Sustainable Maritimes mailing list.
