Dear Friends, The Nova Scotia PIRG will be presenting a public forum on the conflict between Native Rights and Industrial Forestry on Thursday, March 18th at 7:00 pm in room 105, Weldon Law Building, Dalhousie University. The title of the forum is : CONFLICT OF INTERESTS: WHO OWNS NOVA SCOTIA'S FORESTS The keynote speaker is native rights and environmental activist Kevin Thomas whose experiences fighting against clearcut logging in Alberta on behalf of the Lubicon Cree Nation should be of interest for those concerned about unsustainable forestry practices here in Nova Scotia. For the past twelve years Kevin has been actively organizing support for the Lubicon Lake Indian Nation of Northern Alberta. He is founder of the Friend's of the Lubicon, a Canadian organization that focusses on confronting corporations on issues of Native land rights and the environment. Through their "enormously successful" (in the words of the Ontario Divisional Court) boycott of Daishowa paper products, Friend's of the Lubicon prevented the transnational paper company Daishowa from clearcutting traditional Lubicon lands in northern Alberta. The Friends of the Lubicon have run similar campaigns targeting oil and gas corporations for intruding onto unceded Lubicon territories. Kevin works as an advisor to the Lubicon Nation who for the past six months have been engaged in negotiations with the federal government on their land rights. He has also worked for the Innu Nation in their campaign against unsustainable industrial practices in Labrador. Other speakers will include representatives from the Mi 'Kmaq Nation of Nova Scotia and the Ecology Action Center. For more information contact NSPIRG (nspirg@is2.dal.ca) Kevin will be in Nova Scotia for approximately a week and there may be the opportunity for him to meet with groups outside of Halifax.
