Nova Scotia Environmental Network Oceans / Species & Spaces Legislation / Climate Change Action Fund Oceans / Action Notice from: Bill McKiggan <au125@chebucto.ns.ca> "The Nova Scotia Inshore Fishermen's Support Association is holding an information picket at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, November 29th at the World Trade and Convention Centre in Halifax to protest the Canadian Government and it's Department of Fisheries' policies that are deliberately attacking the livelihood, the families, the communities and the very lives of honest Canadians involved in the inshore fishery. "It is a towering irony that Canada is hosting in Halifax the International Ocean Institute"; Don Grady a spokesperson for the Association stated, "while at the same time the Canadian Government and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans are selling off our public fishing resources into private hands, favouring the destructive fishing practices of the corporate dragger fleets, and then attempting to politically persecute, through the courts conservation-minded inshore fishermen who resist these policies. "In January and February of 1999, fourteen hook and line fishermen who are members of the South West Fishermen's Rights Association and the Eastern Shelburne Fixed Gear Association are defending themselves in the Barrington Passage, NS courtroom against D.F.O. fines ranging from $750.00 to $4000.00 for resisting D.F.O.'s plan to eliminate them and their communities. "While the presidents of big fish and oil multinationals are featured in this international conference", Don Grady stated, "inshore fishermen in British Columbia and South West Nova Scotia are being driven out of business and in increasingly tragic situations, driven to take their lives by their own hands. We demand that the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans immediately stop using the courts to harass inshore fishermen and to stop breaking Canadian law by selling out the fishery resources to large corporate interests". "The endangered species act has been forwarded to the committee of the whole, which will agree on ammendments, if any, then forward it to the house for third reading. Could happen Monday. "The wilderness protection act (our 31 wildernesses) is before law amendments with more to be heard on Monday. With A LOT OF LUCK it will be sent to the house for tuesday, and could see passage that day. "There may or may not be a wednesday, and if the house perogues then we start all over again. "The wilderness bill is on the gov.ns.ca site under legislation. If you want to comment please fax to the law amendments committee by noon monday. If the speaker list gets much longer then we're looking at tuesday still in LAC, so wednesday for the house, and there may not be a wednesday... "The more important place we could use help is in reminding mlas that this is widely supported by the public. if you look at Hansard for thursday the 19th you'll find weak support from the three conservative speakers due in some part to pressure from the forest industry (and native ideology for a couple). Call them or their constituency office and tell them what you think. "You might also want to encourage the premier to contiue the session until the wilderness act is through." Climate Change Action Fund / From Steve Szabo <Steve.Szabo@EC.GC.CA> "Please consider this invitation for you or a member of your staff to attend an information session on December 4, 1998 regarding a component of the Climate Change Action Fund (CCAF). The CCAF was established by the Federal Government to help Canada meet the commitments made at the December 1997 International Climate Change meeting in Kyoto, Japan. Announced in the 1998 federal budget, $150 million was allocated over three years to support the development of an implementation strategy and to facilitate early action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The information session will deal with one component of the CCAF - Technology Early Action Measures (TEAM), which has a 3 year budget of $56 million. "The mandate of the TEAM component is to provide additional financial support to existing federal programs for technology projects, to reduce greenhouse gas emissions nationally and internationally. Eligible projects will demonstrate innovation in the transportation, energy, agriculture and various industrial sectors and fall into three main areas: - Working with Canadian industry to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions; - Supporting community-based implementation of greenhouse gas emission reduction technologies; and - Transferring Canadian greenhouse gas reduction technologies to other countries, particularly developing nations. "To achieve the greatest results, TEAM will assign top priority to projects that demonstrate significant financial partnering with a number of interested parties, such as the private sector, provinces and municipalities. "The intent of this information session is to ensure that those with potential interest in developing proposals become aware of the Climate Change Action Fund and the Technology Early Action Measures component. "The session will be given by Wayne Richards and Dave Hajesz of the TEAM office. Both work in Ottawa and have been seconded to TEAM. Their intent is to present an overview of TEAM and answer questions. "Time / Date: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 am on Friday, December 4, 1998 Delta Barrington Hotel, (Sackville Room), 1875 Barrington Street, Halifax "Space is somewhat limited at this session - if you plan to attend please register by phoning Janet James, Nova Scotia Department of the Environment at 424-8569 or Nicole Frigault, Environment Canada at 426-1535. Wayne Richards and Dave Hajesz are available to discuss specific ideas or proposals on a one-on-one basis on Thursday afternoon (Dec 3) or Friday afternoon (Dec 4). To set up an appointment to meet with either Dave or Wayne, please call George Foote, N.S. Dept. Of Natural Resources, at 424 - 8168.
