Hi Peter,

With the move to the 2gb mailboxes a couple of years ago, it was
necessary to move the mail system from its present location on the
text system computer to its own dedicated server and use a retrieval
setup whenever you needed to access your mail. In other words, it
would be sent from the storage server to your account when you
requested it.

Prior to the change, the mail was stored in your text account and
was accessible by using g)files to get to the physical folders
themselves. These folders now exist on a different server and the
folders you see in mail/ can be deleted once you're done with them as
they are no longer being used.

To retrieve your mail now, for backup purposes, type g)mail to
enter PINE, highlight the particular folder you wish to backup and use
e)xport and give it a name: ~/test1 (notice I use the tilde and
forward slash to ensure it will be saved in my main files directory).

Do this with each folder and then exit PINE. Type g)files and you
will find each of your saved folders as large text files which you can
then download to your home system. You can name the actual folder
names, if you wish. For example, I have a folder called: filed
(userhelp answers I've sent in the past few months - I would simply
use: 'e' and then '~/filed'. Make sure that the name you use isn't
already in use in your files directory otherwise you might overwrite
something.

Let us know if you require clarification on this (or any other)
subject.
