Index of Subjects Mike, I think there are still some IPs who maintain only the on-line file, or at least only keep that file always up-to-date. They enter their Directory directly and type in corrections and paste in any new material. I *think* there are still some, from the nature of questions or requests I have occasionally seen. Any IP that maintains the master file(s) on their own computer and simply FTPs updated files to their IP Directory do not need RCS. I have not even looked at my RCS files for I guess a couple of years. For a while we had 2-3 IPs who owned no computer, and who went to the library to use machines with no disk drive to type material directly in their pages on CCN. They had no way of backing up the site, and in fact were encouraged to let RCS do it for them. Simply pulling the plug will leave any such pages in limbo without RCS if they accidentally crash their CCN IP directory. A daily CCN tape backup will not help them if they did not at the moment realize the directory/file is gone and do not discover it until a day or two later or a week or two later. By then the tape backup will have recorded only the blank directory. A solution proposed long ago was to give IPs the option of requesting RCS be disengaged for their directory. 99% of them could easily do so. That would leave only 2 or 3 that need the RCS, if indeed there are any left. Even some of those who now use FP may still be relying on RCS because they also do on-line editing. They would have to be alerted to make their own backups, and floppy backups of the files on their own computer...
