This morning, I had a occassion to review the draft CCN User survey (I was
asked where we might install it...). The version I reviewed is located
at:

	http://dragon.acadiau.ca/~030719r/survey/survey.html

It's possible that there is later version that may address the following
comments....

1) Question 3. "What sort of package..." The (first) option does not seem
to acknowledge that the user might have made a partial payment (i.e. less
than $20). The people in this category may be especially sensitive to
this, feeling that they have given what they can and thus have made a
financial contribution...

This might be remedied by changing "(not a paying member)" to "(less than
$20 per year).

2) Question 9. "... why you choose to remain..." is the only question
that includes a mini-editorial. The statement "We realize that Dial-up
service is becoming a thing of the past", is false and misleading to the
extent that many people within the local calling area do/will not have
physical/financial access to a high-speed telco/cable/satellite connection.

While 'text' dial-up may be for most, a thing of the past, PPP type dialup
of one type or another (free or fee) will be with us for the forseeable
future.

The editoral pre-amble does nothing to improve on the question and should
be removed.

---

While I appreciate that a short survey is generally more effective...
I'll be so bold as to offer the following for consideration:

1) if we collect userID's for the contest, the question about the package
can be eliminated (one less question or a question that could be used to
collect other information...) the draft survey does not seem to
preclude anyone who completed the survey (account holder or not)
from being eligible for the draw... if we require the userID we'll be sure
that the submissions will be relevant to CCN users.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

2) if there were to be one question added I would like to see us ask
whether the user is actively associated with one of our information
providers... this association may be the reason why a significant
number of people with other access/accounts keep their CCN membership...

This might simply be come another option to question 9...

3) Having an 'other/explain' option as part of question 8 ("how were you
introduced...") might generate unanticipated responses which might lead to
other marketing/promotional strategies. Often the greatest benefit of a
survey is in uncovering something unanticipated....

4) Sometimes a survey can be used to 'seed' an idea... Question 3 ("What
package..." if it is retained, might add a 'checkbox' question on
'Donations'...?

5) This being the most promising run at surveying our users that
we've managed in recent history, if might be worth considering an add-on,
supplementary survey that could be linked from the "Thanks for
participating page". Presented as an OPTIONAL survey, for those that
have the time and inclination this might offer an opportunity to gather
valuable information relating to information providers, volunteers, etc...

Are you subscribed to ccn-volunteers?
Have you volunteered in the past?
...
...

Are you a member of an organization that is considering a website.
Are you a member of an organization that would benefit from the use of a
mailing list to comunicate within the organization or to the general
  public?
...
...

We've been so long getting this going that it seems a shame to leave
anything 'on the table' which we might reasonably get (information).

For a prize/inducement, options might include:

+ a one year, top of the line membership,
+ a computer upgrade to the value of $$
+ cd burner..., etc..

regards,

David Potter
