Hi Dan, Good thing it was Thanksgiving ;) If you don't know the root password, reboot and wait until you see the LILO: boot prompt. Hit [TAB] to get a list of boot images -- it's probably "linux". Enter linux init=/bin/bash Then when you get a bash# prompt, run mount -o remount,rw / to remount the file system read-write, change root's password with ``passwd root'', and run mount -o remount,ro / sync sync sync (now hit the reset button, this isn't too safe if the partitions wouldn't remount read-only again) OK, so you have root the root password now. The filesystems are being mounted read-only because there are errors (the machine wasn't properly shut down). Log in as root and make sure they're still mounted read-only (run ``mount''). Run fsck -A When all the errors are fixed you should probably reboot. > ---------- Forwarded message ---------- > Date: Sun, 11 Oct 1998 16:46:23 -0400 (EDT) > From: Dan Neadow <tazman@renc.igs.net> > Reply-To: csuite-install@chebucto.ns.ca > To: csuite-install@chebucto.ns.ca > Subject: HELP ME PLEASE > > Hi I'm Dan Neadow Technical officer with valleynet.on.ca > > WE are having major problems and our tech guru is gone for > the weekend and not sure of when he's returning. > > The problem is that the system did a reboot today and when it > came back up it mounted the root filesystem as read only. > Dialup access is unavailable telnet://valleynet.on.ca wroks but > can't use pine etc because the file system is read only. > > If anyone out here can help me please e-mail me at > tazman@renc.igs.net at your first convienence. > > or phone (613) 732-0106 > sincerely > distressed. > Dan > --- Michael Smith michael@csuite.ns.ca ---
