For those who didn't attend the presentation last fall by the library students, and who didn't see any of the new homepage printouts which have been circulated from time to time since then, I invite you to make comparisons of our new home page with the original library students' version, which I've posted on my personal site at: http://www.chebucto.ns.ca/~sparker/chebucto.html I note that there was strong Chebucto support at the library students demonstration last fall, which included myself, Michael Colborne, Leo Deveau, Bernie Hart, Andrew Wright, David Potter and Chris Majka (sorry if I've forgotten anyone). As initial followup, there was a subsequent meeting with Mark Rushton, Andrew Wright, and Pat Acheson (a volunteer who works on the Daily News web edition and who had volunteered her HTML skills to Chebucto). In the past months since the original presentation of the new website design, some changes have come about as a result of those consultations, and some have come from ad hoc suggestions from people within Chebucto. It should be noted, also, that the two Netcorps students under Leo's supervision worked for three months refining the library students' basic designs. Changes you may have noticed include: 1. The original "Need Help" section has been moved to the taskbar at the top of the page, and indeed is present on all the new pages. 2. The original "New Members Welcome" has been changed to "Join here" with an underlying active interface for new user signup (BTW addressing Chebucto's current crisis of decline in new memberships). 3. The original "Explore your Online Community" is now "The Chebucto Neighbourhood -- Groups, Organizations and Businesses hosted by Chebucto" with the capacity to find our IPs both alpha and by subject. This area might also house the "Featured IP" site. 4. One addition is "Get mail," the webmail feature that most graphical users need for frequent and accessible e-mail reading (BTW introducing to casual observers that Chebucto now has webmail). 5. Another additional feature is "This space reserved for . . . " which provides for fast interaction with users, and will advertise events such as "Word on the Street." 6. The "About Us" link gives a complete description of Chebucto Community Net and what we're all about, including our history, key players, volunteers and vision statement. The best part of this page is the interactive form at the bottom, for people to fill out if they're interested in volunteering with Chebucto. I hope this information will help to clarify the process. The Board is committed to increasing communication and inclusion in this time of change at Chebucto. Sharon Parker Chair
