>>> <ljdeveau@glinx.com> 07/19 1:32 pm >>> Hi everyone, In the first note, it's interesting to see how Stats Cdn rationalizes access issues to the Internet in Canada, although true, it's much more complex than their simple assessment of the problem. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- In 'defence' of Stats Can their approach is subject to methological rigour. While many researchers will mix statistically correct results with less than perfect results, Stats Can will not release reports that cannot be supported rigorously. The sample size for the study referenced was 30,000 for Canada, 2500 for Nova Scotia and 600 for Halifax. When I asked for data relating to Sydney, they would not release it because the sample size was too small, making the results not statistically reliable. About the time this study was originally published, a private sector research firm published internet statistics for Canada using a sample size of 800, and for Atlantic Canada, 52. No more than an opinion poll. While published results may appear rather simple - at one level at least - they are accurate. (albeit, I spend much of my time arguing methodology with my counterparts at Stats Can). ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leo wrote> In the second note about ISPs and access issues in Europe --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- It is good to see that CCN has branched out into other areas such as VolNet, etc. We could see our other service offerings completely wiped-out by the market behaviour of commercial operations. A major CCN resource is our volunteers, who need 'employment' to remain interested. These new initiatives provide funding possibilities and a raison d'etre. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leo wrote .... it's interesting to note that 'local news is the most popular content at online newspaper sites. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Everyone likes to see their names in print. Canadians are the only ones that have a press that publishes pictures and graduation/appointment announcements (so I'm told). Organization newsletters are prime market for IP accounts. Doug M
