ISPs Race to Provide Comprehensive E-Commerce Solutions to Win Over
Small Businesses

Small businesses are rushing to join the e-commerce revolution, and ISPs
are scrambling to be their providers of choice.

But giving small business dial-up access and hosting services is not
enough. Value-added services are the key to winning small business
accounts. As a result, many ISPs are restructuring their services and
forming strategic alliances and partnerships to offer small businesses
the most comprehensive e-commerce packages available.

EarthLink Network Inc. [http://www.earthlink.com] recently unveiled an
e-commerce package designed to help small businesses establish
themselves online. The ISP recently streamlined its Web hosting services
and added several new options to its popular StarterSite. Simplicity is
the key to EarthLink's scaled down offering. By making StarterSite the
basic Web site building block, EarthLink can offer small business owners
exactly what's best for them, instead of making them wade through
complicated pricing grids or pay for unwanted and unnecessary services.

To go along with their basic StarterSite, EarthLink members can pick and
choose from a variety of options to suit their specific business needs.
For example, they can choose from extra server space and traffic
capacity, e-mail, secure server connections, e-commerce services or
other additional features. EarthLink's commerce package, TotalCommerce,
features easy set-up and administration, offers store building and
administration tools and includes a merchant account from Cardservice
International (CSI) that is good for an almost unlimited number of
transactions.

"Our objective is to deliver the power of the Internet to give the
little guy the resources to play in the big guys' sandbox," says Julie
Mantis, vice president of sales at EarthLink. "We want to help
businesspeople keep their mind off technological details and concentrate
on their businesses. By simplifying the way our members order a Web site
and allowing them to customize their StarterSite to their exact
specifications, we've made it easier for our business members to have an
effective presence on the 'Net."

Not to be left behind, MindSpring Enterprises
[http://www.mindspring.com] has also announced the formation of a new
division devoted to e-commerce. Known as MindSpring Biz, the package
includes Internet access, hosting, and Web-based tools for small
businesses. Like EarthLink's business offerings, MindSpring Biz provides
an affordable entry point for small business owners looking to establish
their first Internet presence. MindSpring's Web hosting options allow
customers to easily move from a simple Web page to more sophisticated
electronic commerce driven virtual stores.

The developing trend in the ISP market is to offer an "all-in-one"
e-commerce package to small businesses including hosting, high-speed
access, e-mail services, search engine registration, encryption security
certificates, and credit card and online payment processing services.
Most of these packages allow small business owners to start with a
small, simple site that is easy to upgrade as the business grows.

While EarthLink, MindSpring and other ISPs are just now stepping up
their efforts toward small businesses, other companies have a head
start. Verio Inc. [http://www.verio.com], a company that is better known
for its Web hosting services than its dial-up access services, has
aggressively pursued the small business market and is working toward
becoming the leader in providing e-commerce and hosting solutions to
small businesses. The company has deals in place with such heavyweights
as Microsoft and America Online.

"Strategic marketing agreements with key industry leaders like AOL and
Microsoft are exposing the Verio brand to millions of small and
mid-sized companies seeking to get their businesses online," says Doug
Schneider, president of Verio's Web Services division. "In particular,
our agreements with AOL and AOL UK -- in which Verio was named the
exclusive provider of business Web hosting and e-commerce services --
introduced Verio to more than 4 million potential new business
customers."

ISPs and Web hosting companies like Verio have begun realize that
customer loyalty among small and mid-sized businesses is still up for
grabs; the company with the most comprehensive services is in the best
position to win this race.
