Both colors should accurately display on any system with a minimum 16 colors resolution (which should cover virtually all legacy equipment still in use) without cross-hatching or interference patterns. Both colors provide maximum legibility for text, particularly when default font sizes are used. I will put up a directory with test pages this evening. The benefits of using a solid color over a background graphic are two-fold: faster loading and wider compatibility with all manner of different displays. Please add my address to the relevant mailing list and forward this message to it.
