GLOSSARY OF TERMS

M


Machine Code:
The internal language of a computer.


Macro:
A user-defined set of instructions used to perform repetitive functions over and over again by using one keystroke.


Megabyte:
One million bytes.


Memory:
The working and temporary storage area inside a computer. There are three types of computer memory: ROM (Read-Only Memory), RAM (Random Access Memory), and Perpetual.


Menu:
A list of program options displayed on a monitor for user selection. Employed as an alternative to direct keyboard input, items are selected with a pointer device or via the Cursor and Enter keys.


MFM:
Modified Frequency Modulation. An older hard drive type.


Modem:
MOdulator/DEModulator. An input and output device that transmits information via a phone line to other computers.


Monitor:
A television-like screen that displays information and graphics.


Motherboard:
The main circuit board of a computer.


Mouse:
A hand-size input device derived from the trackball Used mainly for graphics, it enters positional data into a computer.


MS-DOS:
Microsoft Disk Operating System. A computer operating system that comes alone or as part of most operating systems, or emulated by many systems.


Multi-User Software:
Software that allows one or more users to simultaneously access and process data.
