Arrival at Hunt Island off Burgeo;
Hot supper and a tot of rum after a safe passage. |
July 16th found us at sea with scant wind and under power from midnight until 0600. With dawn a moderate southerly came up which by afternoon was pushing us along about 4 ½ knots. |
As we closed with the land it grew increasingly foggy so Peter’s first glimpse of Newfoundland was a rocky ledge in the Burgeo archipelago around 1800 hours. |
We passed along the NE side of Rencontre Island and at 1945 had the anchor down in Hunt Island cove. Our evening celebration was a fine steamed dinner cooked on the woodstove, which simultaneously dried out three soggy crew in the toasty cabin. Peter was awarded his special tot of rum for being the first to sight land. The other crew followed his good example as we celebrated our 35-hour crossing from Cape Breton to “The Rock”. |
