Word on the street

Sunday September 24 saw the first "Word on The Street" festival held on a barricaded section of Spring Garden Road. Chebucto was there to see and be seen. Our presence was coordinated by Joan Macintosh who reports that attendance was impressive. Hardware was supplied by Apple Canada, and an online discussion was facilitated by CityTV in Toronto. Thanks go to both of these sponsors. Thanks and congratulations also extend to the volunteers who made our presence known at this celebration of literacy.

September found the MetroCAN board once more looking for active participants after the departure of founding director Laura Jantek. Laura, while performing her full-time duties at the reference desk of the Halifax City Regional Library, has been active from the early days in all aspects of society business. Her most recent contribution has been her role in the founding of our Committee on Information Policy. This committee was struck to ensure that society members and CCN users are kept aware of the responsibilities that accompany our freedom to express ourselves in all forms, electronic and otherwise. Our best wishes go to Laura in getting her life back.<g>

Finances

Active society members understand that the Chebucto Community Net can only operate with the help of its dozens of dedicated volunteers. It is also a fact that while we promise that the system will remain free to use, it has never been free to operate. It is a policy of the society that the day to day operation of the system be financed by the revenued generated thru society memberships. We want to take this opportunity to ask users of the system who are not members of the society to consider how CCN benefits them. If you believe that CCN is a benefit to you in particular, and to the community in general, a MetroCAN membership and/or donation is a great way to show your support.
