Macquarrie Island and other places in Australia have been named
after Major-General Lachlan Macquarrie. During the period when
convicts were being evicted to Australia as settlers in the new
colony, Major-General Macquarrie was Governor of New South Wales.
The colony prospered under his prudent and wise government. After
laying out the city of Sydney, Australia, he returned home in
1821, to the great regret of the colonists.
