Well Donna you always have such great posts.

Makes my old brain cells get active!

There is no doubt the calls used in the Owl Surveys attract

Horned Owls. I know this from experience on my back steps.

But I've never had one on my owl route. Its not the type

of habitat that you would expect Horned Owls.

In my younger days when I did a lot of hunting and fishing

I would be out well before sunrise and well after sunset.

Then I would be on marshs or along rivers - generally wet spots

and I would hear Horned Owls quite often. See a brood of Common Mergansers

along the river and the chances were good to see a Horned Owl after sunset.

 Same with a teal marsh.

They seem more habitat specific than Barred Owls.

Ann-Lee sent a great report about the owl survey.

 A lot of info there!

Looking forward to swimming a fly for Keji trout.

 Enjoy the winter

It would be fun to form some sort of auditory census for Great-horned owl nesting pairs right about now. It's interesting to learn of just where they are nesting and whether they are increasing/decreasing. The nocturnal owl survey takes care of this to some extent, but it would be interesting to learn more of their whereabouts, particularly close to towns, etc.

Here's hoping that this 2nd apparently 'open winter' (I know that March can still surprise us) does not negatively affect Barred owl populations. Bernard Forsythe's report of last year's uncommonly low (nonexistent?) success rate for nesting Barred owls leaves us hoping this winter will be more productive.

The yellow-breasted chat must be regretting its choices by now?
