The introduction of foreign species, by choice or by accident, is almost
always problematic. There are many, many examples of this, from Purple
Loosestrife here to Cane Toads in Australia.

Just because a foreign plant/animal is a benefit to one or a few other
species, doesn't mean it is not detrimental to others. At the very least,
each rose is taking up space that a native species could be growing in.
Every Ring-necked Pheasant, Rainbow Trout or free-roaming cat is eating
food that could be eaten by a native animal, or heaven-forbid, allowed to
live and grow to its own potential.

It's true that we should be working to the benefit of our native birds (and
other wildlife). But doing so by encouraging alien species is playing with
fire. Just ask the Australians.

Randy
