Some forest advocates say cutting is grossly excessive = while NR and the industry say all is fine. For those who have no way to = see for themselves this generates a barrier to action. But when stands of large hardwood are chipped for export or trucked = to feed a remote bio furnace while established value-added operations = have to close because their essential raw material, hardwood timber, is = unavailable then it is clear that something is seriously wrong. And it = is also clear that adjustments are needed. How could such things happen ? The basic forces are as old as = humanity; nomads don't conserve soil or nurture anything. They extract, = damage, destroy and, when necessary, move on. Under our first past the = post system our elected leaders look to a short future (the next = election), and do whatever is necessary to win the next election. They = in effect have the mentality of nomads. The first step to sound forest = policy on crown and private land is sound government which looks and = plans far into the future. Numerous flavors of Proportional = Representation enable this. Compare Denmark and Nova Scotia. Their sole natural resource = is being located on the coast. NS is also on the coast and has much more = natural resources. But look at the difference. Denmark, among other = things, is a major trading nation and an important designer and builder = of ships. They are one of the three most happy nations on earth = (Nat.Geo. 232(5):30-59, 2017). Canada never has had PR in any jurisdiction, so far as I know. But = Prime Minister Mackenzie King acted in that context; he stressed the = need for consultation on all major decisions which is the essence of PR. = He e.g. managed to build a navy in far less time than than it currently = takes Ottawa to build a row boat.
