Hi All,

The certification of foods as healthy and coming from environmentally
sustainable harvesting practices is increasingly becoming the standard in
the food industry. Nova Scotia lobster is certified by an international
organization, the Marine Stewardship Council. We saw in the news lately that
Nova Scotia lobster fishers were not opposing the establishment of
at-sea-observers of their harvesting practices but the method of
implementation for such a program. This demonstrates the affect of
certification programs on ensuring the implementation of quality enhancing
and sustainable practices in an industry. The Mersey Tobeatic Research
Institute (MTRI) works with the national Forest Stewardship Council in the
certification of sustainable woodlot management practices in Nova Scotia.
Bird friendly certification ensures that coffee is grown in a forest habitat
supporting a diversity of wildlife and not in a clearcut with palm trees
planted around it so it can be labelled shade-grown. Certification is a
powerful tool that consumers can use to help ensure their food is healthy
and that their buying practices support sustainable harvesting practices.

John
