I haven't propagated red maple specifically, but attempted to do so with
sugar maples this winter. I forwent the use of rooting horomone, just
'cause. I clipped the whips in late March, and stuck them directly in pots
with soil. Kept them moist and inside my home. The leaves emerged from the
buds immediately, but quickly died away - the plants were doomed. When I
pulled them from the pot, roughly one month after planting, no roots had
formed.

I'm new to this business, but I think hardwoods are better propagated in
fall, so the roots have time to establish before the leaves and flowers
emerge from the buds.
