Grit and crushed oyster shells serve different purpose.Oyster shells (or se=
pia "cuttlebone") provide birds with calcium, a mineral critically required=
for egg shell formation, bone health, and some other physiological functio=
ns.Grit or small rocks are ingested by birds to help grinding-down food (e.=
g. seeds) in the gizzard =3D> aka gastic mill to compensate for the lack of=
 theeth.
This time of the year access to grit seems more of an issue for seed eaters=
 than access to calcium.=C2=A0=20
However, with the use of grit on sidewalks and roads to avoid us from slipp=
ing there shouldn't be no real shortage.=C2=A0=20
Mixing some grit (traction sand may offer a variety of suitable size grits =
for the birds to choose from?!) with the seed feed may provide a cleaner so=
urce on site.

I tried mixing some budgie grit in with my food before. Hard to say if the=
birds appreciated the gesture. I believe the grit I used was made of crush=
ed oyster shells. Give it a try I guess and see what happens.Chris

17084 I am seeking advice on whether, since snow now covers the ground, we =
should try provide "grit" for our backyard birds and if so, is there a suit=
able product readily available?=C2=A0 I noticed the doves were often peckin=
g at the sand between my patio stones in the summer- can't do that now.
