Hi Keith, All,
I did suspect that this is what they call a rolling front, or a rolling
cloud, but I'm not enuf of a meteorologist to know. Also, the weird thing
was, this was really the back side of that particular system, very strongly
defined as they can be, sometimes.
All of this was easily viewed on the EnvCda satellite and radar pages.
IIRC, that rear edge was out over the Gulf of St. Lawrence about an hour
later. That is still the case now, as the 2-3 systems involved extend over
vast distances, but the worst of that one is now over Labrador:
