Thanks to all for your responses! I realise I didn't make it clear that 
I've been feeding hummers for several decades and am therefore very 
familiar with their summer feeding patterns; what I am describing is 
completely new and totally different from anything I have encountered 
before......

I will continue offering nectar all summer and looking for other 
possible environmental issues (may consider getting a new feeder - but a 
trial with a neighbour's feeder made no difference..........) If there 
is any riveting resolution to this story, I will pass it on!!
