The eagles seem to be more common in most localities of NS, and now =
nesting in places where they were once very rare, at least in the past =
couple of hundred years. (Historical writings and observations passed =
through a couple of generations...) =20

=20

I think the rising eagle populations, stemming from a lack of will to =
enforce proper management of carrion on the large scale farms is =
starting to create some new ecological stressors in our province. We =
should try to take note (collect some consistent stats) of eagle =
predation on osprey chicks, loon chicks and so on. It appears we are =
out of balance. We will likely have to wait for a disease/ =
contamination outbreak before witnessing meaningful change in the =
management of carcasses, and eagles will continue to fair well, =
potentially at the expense of other species (maybe even ourselves).

=20

The osprey were not successful nesters on highway 8 last year. Not sure =
of the cause there. They=E2=80=99re back for another try this year. =
We=E2=80=99ll see how they do. Spring always brings so much promise!

I can=E2=80=99t be quantitative, but seems to me, eagles are =
considerably more common down here in Yarmouth than they were a =
generation ago. They aren=E2=80=99t up to the densities seen in parts =
of Kings County, but so far but they and vultures are n the increase.

=20

Osprey abundance is what=E2=80=99s down. Have hears some folks say they =
suspect predation on osprey chicks by eagles.

=20

I am curious as to whether the turkey vulture will be as successful in =
Kings Co where the eagles have a strong =E2=80=98foot-hold=E2=80=99. It =
is striking the difference between Annapolis and Kings County vulture =
populations. I had four turkey vultures soar low over my backyard this =
afternoon. I wiggled my toes to let them know I wasn=E2=80=99t dead =
(though I was a little tuckered out from the migration count and nature =
hike today, ha, ha). =20

There were 2 soaring along the edge of the North Mountain above Canning =
this morning. They're not very common in Kings Co.
