And I did that - not in the river.<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">When I put the canoe in the water there was ice on<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">the sides of the river but it warmed nicely as the day went on.<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">As it warmed, the flies came out. Mayflies in clouds along with<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">midges and stoneflies. I was there a week or so ago and the stoneflies<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">were small and black. Yesterday they were medium size and a light brown.<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">Not nearly as many but they were between 2 - 3 cms. They have a very short<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">adult life span. There was no real large ones. I have only seen them over in<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">Minards Bay. and there only a couple of times but I don't be in that bay very much.<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">The Mayflies are of at least 2 species. One is small and  light coloured, <br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">the other dark and a little bigger. The trout fell for my fake flies early one but<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">when the clouds started, there was too much competition for my fakes!<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">Swallows were feeding well - but paddling in flowing water doesn't allow much<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">time to observe the swallows. Grackles and Red winged blackbirds seemed to be<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">setting up house in the area.<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">There were no swallows at the bridge where they usually nest but I will keep<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">checking. Ruffed Grouse and Ravens made interesting sounds all throughout<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">the day. <br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">Mayflies seem to inhabit very definite parts of the river. Great clouds in<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">places but then none for considerable distance. Must be a reason but its<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">unknown to me. Stoneflies on the other hand appear almost anywhere<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">along the river and midges seem most plentiful where there are no mayflies.<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">All the marvels of nature!<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">Enjoy the spring - go and see the Mayflies!<br/></span> </div> <div> <span style="font-size: 14pt;">Paul<br/></span> </div> </body></html>
