I ran my third route on April 29, which runs from Middlewood back to Vogler=
's Cove and out to East Port Medway. It was a clear evening

but one of the darkest that I've been out in for a long time. It was pitch=
black and you could see nothing once out of the car. That said it was a p=
henomenal owl night with 11 barred owls and one northern saw-whet. In addi=
tion lots of deer were seen as well as raccoons, a snowshoe hare, some rode=
nts, and a porcupine. Although the temperature was at minus four the sprin=
g peepers were very vocal. This is the first time I've run that route with=
out wood frogs. I'm going to say that it had to be the temperature as it i=
s one of the best wood frog areas I've ever seen in previous years.
