Her education has = included work with forest songbirds (BSc, University of New Brunswick), = seabird physiology (MSc, Simon Fraser University) and multi-colony = seabird tracking (PhD, Memorial University of Newfoundland).=20 Until recently, winter distribution, movements, and ecology have been = poorly known for most birds. This knowledge gap precludes efforts to = understand and interpret the challenges that affect seabirds year-round. = Bird-borne tracking devices can record the behaviour and location of = free-ranging seabirds in remote ocean areas throughout the year. Using = data during 2008-2010, we described the winter distribution and = movements of Common Murres and Thick-billed Murres from 7 breeding = colonies from the Canadian Arctic to Newfoundland and Labrador. This = talk will outline the importance of particular marine areas for murres, = the risks they may encounter on wintering grounds, and speculate on how = the two species may share resources in the Northwest Atlantic. Refreshments available during and following and is open to the public. ------=_NextPart_000_0026_01D15793.03E9FB90 Content-Type: text/html; charset="Windows-1252" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable

<DIV style=3D"FONT-SIZE: 12pt; FONT-FAMILY: 'Calibri'; COLOR: #000000">
<FONT face=3D"Times New Roman"><FONT size=3D2 = face=3DArial>Murres of the=20 North Atlantic - Laura Tranquilla

Place and Time: NS Museum of = Natural History,=20 1747 Summer Street, Halifax, Lower Auditorium on Thursday, January 28th = at=20 7:30PM

<SPAN lang=3DEN-US=20 style=3D'FONT-FAMILY: ; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; = mso-fareast-font-family: calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; = mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: "Times New = Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-ansi-language: en-us; = mso-fareast-language: en-us; mso-bidi-language: ar-sa'>Laura=20 McFarlane Tranquilla is a seabird ecologist by training but her interest = in=20 birds began with her <SPAN lang=3DEN-US=20 style=3D"FONT-FAMILY: ; COLOR: ; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; = mso-fareast-font-family: calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; = mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: arial; = mso-ansi-language: en-us; mso-fareast-language: en-us; = mso-bidi-language: ar-sa">introduction=20 to mist-netting songbirds in the blackfly-infested forests of her home = province,=20 New Brunswick.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> Since then = she has=20 pursued seabird field research on remote and stormy islands on both east = and=20 west coasts of Canada.<SPAN style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> = Her=20 education has included work with forest songbirds (BSc, University of = New=20 Brunswick), seabird physiology (MSc, Simon Fraser University) and = multi-colony=20 seabird tracking (PhD, Memorial University of Newfoundland). =

<SPAN lang=3DEN-US=20 style=3D"FONT-FAMILY: ; COLOR: ; mso-ascii-theme-font: minor-latin; = mso-fareast-font-family: calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; = mso-hansi-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family: arial; = mso-ansi-language: en-us; mso-fareast-language: en-us; = mso-bidi-language: ar-sa">
<FONT=20 face=3DArial>Until recently, winter distribution, movements, and ecology = have been=20 poorly known for most birds.
