Hi Richard and all
I rather suspect the eBird report you produced might be a bit misleading. I t=
hink more waxwings than that were reported to eBIrd but were disqualified fr=
om entering the general data base because they involve lists reported as Chr=
istmas Bird Count routes. I have always just kept a running count for each s=
pecies as the day progressed on any routes I do on full day counts and most t=
imes I put in a pretty extensive day often involving some night time observa=
tions. On CBCS the area tends to be smaller than a spring migration count wh=
ere my route covers a good hunk of western Pictou Co from Pictou to the Colc=
hester border. However, even this type of data does not seem to be of much g=
ood or interest to the statisticians in control of eBird. If this has change=
d recently or if I am wrong on this, maybe someone will let me know

I personally find it annoying that this data is not counted or at least be i=
ncluded in the quarterly eBird lists the seasonal editors receive to compile=
the NS Birds magazine. I find it great to be able to record and compare dat=
a from one's route from year to year when I do the same sections on the coun=
ts I do and for many years I do 5-7 counts. For some of the counts this year=
I tried to keep separate lists for each community but I found it easier to l=
ump everything together in getting my total for the evening tally and have n=
ot yet got around to filing individual lists for each stop in the day. At le=
ast the birds on CBC will become part of the data on the Audubon database bu=
t the spring count data does not seem to be published anywhere any more that=
I can see so the route data I and others submitted has been lost in that i=
t is not counted anywhere making one wonder why do the count at all. However=
it does get people out looking and sometimes different people than who do a=
 CBC.=20

Over the winter period, I have had 2 observations of Bohemian waxwings-1 on t=
he Economy CBC and 16 at access road to Big I. However I have 7 reports of 3=
28 cedar waxwings including a flock of 125 in Plymouth below my home on the S=
pringville CBC. I checked every bird in this flock through my scope for Bo=
hemians and there were none to be found. I would think this report would not=
 be in your report Richard.

In past years anyone reporting this number of winter cedars would be asked i=
f they checked the flock close enough as Bohemian is the most expected waxwi=
ng after November but I think for some reason this year, many cedars have st=
ayed behind. It might have something to do with the very bountiful supply of=
berries such as Hawthorne and Mountain Ash as well as apples be it flowerin=
g crab or Apple trees which seemed to have a lot of fruit this winter. =20

Enjoy winter nature=20
