[NOTE CHANGE BELOW.] >=20 > AUG. 12, 2015 - I have to =91eat crow=92 and change my diagnosis = above. In fact, this experience birder has two very iffy reports from = today. First, even though again I had no visual equipment with me, = today in Wolfville Harbour there were three birds quite close to me that = looked just like yesterday=92s =93greater yellowlegs=94. But today all = three looked like lesser yellowlegs. Yesterday=92s single bird was = close to me, but not close enough to see size and length of beak. Today = the three looked to be close to similar-sized (to each other). My = diagnosis of =93lesser=94 will have to stay tentative. This is another = lesson on the difficulty of pigeon-holing yellowlegs, especially when = the legs are covered with Wolfville intertidal mud! >=20 > My other iffy report came at home in east Wolfville at 7 p.m., when I = was out on our mini-deck recovering from today=92s extreme humidity. I = noticed a largish bird flying with fast wing-beats right toward me (our = deck faces east and is on the third floor of our apartment bldg.). My = first impression was that it was a peregrine falcon, but when it got to = me and flew over our building, I noticed it was not a falcon at all but = a nightjar and almost certainly a common nighthawk, the first one I have = seen in several years and perhaps a decade. This bird zigged only once = in its path (no usual erratic flight pattern), and it was clearly in a = sprint to get somewhere toward the west. But my sighting is a bit iffy = only because I saw no markings at all, since I didn=92t have binoculars. = The nightjar was quite close to me when it flew over our roof. >=20 > Cheers from Jim in Wolfville. > _______________________________________________ > Nature mailing list > Nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca > = http://blomidonnaturalists.ca/mailman/listinfo/nature_blomidonnaturalists.= ca --Apple-Mail=_6106D20F-B052-4E6E-A48F-E47297900D22 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Content-Type: text/html; charset=windows-1252

<meta http-equiv=3D"Content-Type" content=3D"text/html = charset=3Dwindows-1252">
<body style=3D"word-wrap: break-word; = -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: = after-white-space;">

Begin forwarded message:

<blockquote type=3D"cite"><div = style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; = margin-left: 0px;"><span style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica'; color:rgba(0, = 0, 0, 1.0);">From: <span = style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica';">Jim Wolford <<a = href=3D"mailto:jimwolford@eastlink.ca">jimwolford@eastlink.ca>
<= /span>
<div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; margin-right: 0px; = margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px;"><span = style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica'; color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 1.0);">Subject: = <span style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica';">[ValleyNature] 3 = iffy lesser yellowlegs + 1 iffy c. nighthawk, = Wolfville

<div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px;"><span = style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica'; color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 1.0);">Date: = <span style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica';">August 13, 2015 at = 5:56:39 PM ADT

<div style=3D"margin-top: 0px; = margin-right: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px;"><span = style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica'; color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 1.0);">To: = <span style=3D"font-family:'Helvetica';">Nature BNS <<a = href=3D"mailto:nature@blomidonnaturalists.ca">nature@blomidonnaturalists.c= a>

<meta http-equiv=3D"Content-Type" = content=3D"text/html charset=3Dwindows-1252"><div style=3D"word-wrap: = break-word; -webkit-nbsp-mode: space; -webkit-line-break: = after-white-space;"><div style=3D"margin: 0px;">AUG. 11, 2015 = - When the tide was mostly out (low), Wolfville Harbour had a = greater yellowlegs.
