Hi Paul,
    Thanks for your input but the streams I have in mind are free of =
dams.

  =EF=BB=BF An interesting question Dave.=20
  If you compare Kings County to PEI which has much the same drawbacks =
that you mention,=20
  4 differences are immediately noticeable.=20
  1 - no bass in PEI=20
  2 - no large dams in PEI, a few low height affairs but not like Kings =
County.=20
  3 - Fish Kills in PEI are prominent in the media. Not a news item in =
NS.=20
  4 - The daily bag limit for trout in PEI is 16, in NS its 5. The trout =
population in PEI seems healthy=20
  with very little stocking.=20
  I think # 2 is very suspect as the prime reason for the demise of =
trout in Kings County.=20
  Enjoy the spring=20

    Hi Darrell & All,                        May 7, 2015=20
        Over the last 65 years just about all of the formerly highly =
productive Trout streams in Kings County have become dead water.=20
    =20
        Streamflow instability, siltation from careless highway =
widening, erosion from extensive clearcuts or cultivated land, abnormal =
nutrient influx and acid rain are probable contributing factors, =
depending upon the settiing and there may be other unsuspected causes =
but in the complete absence of Bass, now or previously, they are =
excluded.=20
    =20
        If this kind of disaster can happen in the absence of Bass it =
could be rushing to judgment to blame Bass where they are present. They =
are tolerant of warm, sluggish water (low O2 I suspect) so would be =
expected to survive where Trout do not.=20
    =20
        I don't know Lake Egmont but I notice there are roads along =
three sides and one of these is just along the eastern side. The =
topography suggests water fed in from swamp brooks as opposed to spring =
fed so I wonder how ir fares in dry periods.=20
    =20
        When we first had a cottage at Sunken Lake in 1971 the walls and =
windows were shingled with swarms of insects when lights were on at =
night and the shallows in season had mob of Penny Toads and schools of =
Minnows. By 1995 insects, Toads and Minnows were very sparse.=20
    =20
        In all questions it is far better to iterate to the truth than =
to identify a possibly innocent culprit.=20

      Smallmouth basically wipe out trout, has happened in Lake Egmont =
and other lakes coming off the Shubenacadie River. Lake Egmont used to =
be flourshing in trout, not since tha bass entered. The the Pickerel =
entered about 4 years later than the smallmouthand that is all she =
wrote.

      The only trout now are on our eastern shore watersheds and they =
are in danger I hear from smallmouth, sad indeed.

      All the best,

      Darrell

            I think the reputation of Small-mouth Bass has been sullied =
by zenophobia; introduced and therefore bad. I asked on Naturens shortly =
after I joined, for proof that they were harmful and received only =
fluff.=20
            They flourish where Trout can not survive, are fun to catch =
and, when skinned and filletted, are good eating. I have never =
encountered Bass in likely Trout water. In marginal water large Bass may =
eat small Trout but I would suppose that large Trout would do likewise.=20
            Plants and animals should be judged on properties and =
effects not origin.=20

          Have never heard of any goldfish or carp down Yarmouth way. A =
former German was interested in growing carp for the European market =
35-odd years ago. I expressed grave doubt that he could get the permits. =
 Don=E2=80=99t think anything happened.

          Will try to remember to pass along any news on this and will =
keep ears open.

          We gotta start eating and encouraging more people to eat =
pickerel and smallmouth bass! No more fish intros., please!

          At the Museum, we have been trying to determine the =
distribution of goldfish within the Province.

          We would appreciate any geo-reference reports on their =
occurrence . If anyone has such data, would appreciate if they could =
contact me.
