I have been trying to feed the robins in our neighbourhood. After a
trip to Costco, I put out apples, grapes, strawberries, suet and a
chopped up hard-boiled egg.

One robin has come and considers it his/her stash. It chases off any
other robins and allows only starlings to get at it. So much for
sharing the wealth. I put more out front so that at least one more
robin could feed.

90% of the time it eats only the apple. I have seen it with a grape and
occasionally it will peck at the suet and egg. Nothing, including the
starlings, will touch the strawberries. I guess I will have strawberry
shortcake tonight.

in The Valley compared with other areas of the
province.  Nearly all of the robins we have
seen looked fat and very healthy, but we heard
on Thursday that Michael Laceby of The

the early woodcocks, which have been so
                          incredibly abundantly reported by everyone
this year of the very late spring.  Two days
ago we heard by way of a Sierra Club message
that Hope Swinimer had quite a few woodcocks
at Hope For Wildlife in Seaforth that were in
need of care.  Very few of the reported
sightings to us on naturens have been of birds
in distress, but both Andrew Hebda and Hope
Swinimer reported oodles of calls about
distressed or dying birds of various kinds,
including especially robins.  Maybe we can
